After it was an integrated environmental map, Iraq is facing severe pollution in its air, land and water, and what has exacerbated the repercussions of climate change in Iraq, according to specialized experts, is mismanagement, neglect, corruption and weak measures to address them, amid warnings that the next is worse.
An expert on water strategies and policies, Ramadan Hamza, said that "Iraq as a whole is under the influence of a worsening water crisis, which threatens to lose food security, which leads to a loss of the country's biological and ecological diversity."
Hamza, who works as a secretary at the International Association of Hydrology in Iraq (IAH), added that "biodiversity in Iraq was at risk years before the drought occurred, due to radiation in the region, depleted uranium, and soil degradation, which led to a deterioration in livestock of different diversity."
He explained, "Iraq was an integrated map, as it was distinguished by several elements, including demographic elements, from high mountains, snow, several rivers, plateaus, sedimentary plains and desert deserts. Each one complements the other in drawing an appropriate environmental map for Iraq."
Hamza added, "However, since the siege and after 2003, Iraq began to lose it gradually, so oil became polluting the air, land and water, and on the other hand, agricultural fields began to be bulldozed near cities, to increase the commercial value of these lands, but the straw that broke the camel's back was in 2003 when The state collapsed, and worsened in 2018 after Basra’s water was polluted, and thousands of its people were infected with infectious diseases, and the rate of cancers in southern Iraq is still increasing as a result of water pollution and its decline.
The environmental expert pointed out that "the fish that are few in number, feed on pollutants, whether from chemical fertilizers that are used in agricultural projects or from medical and industrial waste that are thrown directly into river waters, so they are often unsuitable for human consumption."
And he stated, “Based on the foregoing, the Iraqi environment as a whole is polluted, and the government’s treatments in this regard are weak, and the exacerbated migration in southern Iraq as a result of the drying up of the marshes and lakes, including Lake Sawa and Hamrin Dam, and then the Ministry, will be followed by the Habbaniyah, This is compounded by mismanagement, neglect and corruption with climate change sweeping the region of North Africa, part of southern Europe and the Middle East.
He added, "However, Iraq is the only country that can rise among all countries, even European, because it has a large budget and its geographical and geopolitical position is still distinguished, as it has minds, thinkers and experts, but corruption cancels all that, when corruption spreads, all ends." The necessities of life, so political, social and economic life has stopped in Iraq, and if this approach continues, the next will be worse.”
