Today, Thursday, the Ministry of Environment in the federal government determined the capacity of the infrastructure of sewage plants in Baghdad, and the volume of daily water consumption per capita, while it announced the formation of special committees to follow up water pollution throughout Iraq.
The Director General of the Technical Department in the Ministry of Environment, Amer Al-Fayyad, said that "the capacity of the infrastructure of sewage stations ranges from 3 to 4 million people in Baghdad," noting that "the capital, Baghdad, has a population of nearly 8 million, and therefore the stations operate with full capacity." to drain water as a result of population pressure.
Al-Fayyad added, "All the existing rain stations throw sewage without treatment as a result of pressure on the stations," pointing out that "there is a tendency to deepen drinking water pipes to avoid pollution."
He pointed out that "the share of one person, according to the official statistics of the Municipality of Baghdad, consumes 250 liters of sewage per day, and 300 liters of raw water, which is a large percentage."
He continued, "The fish projects from Baghdad to the district of Essaouira do not succeed properly due to the high level of pollution in the water," stressing that "the government is serious about developing plans and quick solutions to these problems."
He pointed out that "the ministry has formed a committee to follow up water pollution throughout Iraq, after which it submits its report to the office of the Prime Minister to see the extent of the pollution and treat it."
