Today, Thursday, the Ministry of Water Resources announced the depletion of more than 50% of the water reserves during the summer season, and while determining the size of the strategic and renewable reserves of groundwater, it confirmed at the same time the formation of a joint committee to study desertification, cultivated areas and groundwater.
The advisor of the Ministry of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, said that "according to the accounts and studies at the ministry, the renewable storage is equal to about 5 billion and 200 million cubic meters, and this quantity can be used," noting that "there is a reservoir called strategic storage and its quantities are large, and in terms of The process uses only a small part of it."
Diab added, "The amount of water used in agriculture during the summer season relied on very limited wells, but in the winter season, more water is used to grow wheat crops using pivot sprinklers."
He continued, "According to our expectations, we have exhausted more than 50% of the water reserves during the past year, due to the lack of sufficient rain to compensate for what we lost, and these are the reasons that make us expand the use of groundwater."
He pointed out that "the groundwater is calculated according to the monitored wells, and even the dug wells, it is possible to calculate the amount of water drop during the winter season, and sometimes it reaches 7 or 10 meters, as the water level drops based on the amount of water."
However, he added, "There is a rule in groundwater, where sweet water is at the top, while salt water goes down, and these are indicators that determine the level of groundwater," noting that "there was a high abundance of groundwater, but the issue was not exploited properly. True, as it was supposed to be invested in the face of desertification."
He pointed out that "there is a committee formed in the light of the previous meeting of the Council of Ministers headed by one of the council's advisors and representatives from the ministry and the Ministry of Agriculture, where the committee will study drought and areas expected to be cultivated and focus on groundwater."
Regarding the green belt projects, Diab explained, "The important point is not planting green belts, but rather they must be sustained and watered, as the green belt in the Holy Karbala Governorate has been subjected to significant damage during the past years due to lack of sustainability, maintenance, and securing and properly caring for irrigation."
