Shafaq News / The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, praised on Friday the role of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi in maintaining civil peace in the country.
This came during a meeting between Al-Kazemi and Guterres, on the sidelines of the General Assembly meetings held in New York, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Media Office, received by Shafak News Agency.
Guterres affirmed, according to the statement, his support for "Al-Kazemi's initiative in the national dialogue between the political forces, and the pursuit of political detente," noting his rejection of "aggressions that affect Iraq's sovereignty, support for Iraq's unity, and refusal to interfere in its internal affairs."
In turn, Al-Kazemi expressed his thanks for the efforts of the United Nations mission to help Iraq by holding transparent and fair elections, praising the role of the United Nations and its development programs for "strengthening local capacities, and in rehabilitating those affected by terrorism, and its projects in the fields of environment and sustainable development."
The meeting also discussed the situation in Iraq, and the government's efforts to mitigate political differences by adopting the national dialogue initiative between the political forces. It also touched on the situation in the displacement camps, and the government's efforts to close the largest number of them, and return the displaced to their areas of origin.
The meeting witnessed a discussion of the education file in Iraq, and the government's keenness to advance it, and develop the infrastructure through its initiation of the construction of 1,000 schools throughout Iraq as a first stage.
Al-Kazemi and Guterres' meeting also dealt with the drought file and its great effects on Iraq, and the importance of helping Iraq in this file, which is related to the lives of citizens and the country's economies.
Guterres concluded by stressing the need to "address the drought problem that Iraq suffers from, due to what some riparian countries are doing to change the course of the rivers."
