Shafaq News/ The Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani announced, on Saturday, directing the ministry's departments to solve all challenges facing dams in Kurdistan Region, as part of the measures taken to confront the water crisis.
Al-Hamdani said in a joint conference with the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources in the Kurdistan Regional Government, Bekard Talabani, which was held in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, and Shafaq News Agency continued, "We thank the Minister for inviting us to visit Sulaymaniyah and discuss the problems and obstacles facing the Federal and Kurdistan Ministries of Agriculture. We discussed all matters that can provide support from the Federal Ministry.
He added, "We discussed the issue of rehabilitating the Darbandikhan Dam and the problems it suffers from. We listened to a detailed report by the dam director and the challenges the dam faces in light of the lack of water revenues. We directed our departments in Baghdad to take urgent measures in coordination with the Dams Authority in the Kurdistan Region to solve all problems."
Al-Hamdani pointed out that "the Darbandikhan Dam is a strategic, sovereign, that serves all of Iraq, not just the Kurdistan Region. Therefore, the Federal Ministry is very keen to maintain all dams in the Kurdistan Region, and we are responsible for maintaining them in coordination with the region."
"We listened to all the problems and directed our departments to address them urgently as soon as possible to confront the water crisis," he added.
He pointed out that "the ministry is now working with the Kurdistan Region to dig wells in remote areas within the Zakho administration to take advantage of groundwater."
