Parliament holds a session to elect the President of the Republic and two candidates withdraw from the competitive race
Shafaq News/ Today, Thursday, the Iraqi parliament held a session dedicated to electing the president of the republic, in light of the failure of the two main Kurdish parties to agree on a single candidate for this position.
The Media Department of the House of Representatives said in a statement that the Speaker of the House, Muhammad al-Halbousi, opened the session after completing the quorum, with the attendance of 269 deputies.
She added that the House of Representatives proceeded with a secret vote to choose the President of the Republic.
In turn, a parliamentary source told Shafak News Agency, that the political forces are currently divided and do not agree on the election of the President of the Republic.
He explained that there are two teams, the first, the Kurdistan Democratic Party, the Sovereignty Alliance, and part of the coordination framework that will vote for Latif Rashid, adding that the second party, the Patriotic Union and the other part of the framework, and a number of independent representatives will vote for Barham Salih.
For its part, the Media Department of the House of Representatives announced in a statement that it had submitted a request to withdraw the nomination for the position of President of the Republic to the presidency of the Council, and they are: Rier Ahmed and Omar Al-Barzanji.
