The Ministry of Water Resources described the current autumn season as little rain, stressing that drinking water and human uses will be secured even if the neighborhood role completes all its projects on the rivers that go to Iraq, explaining that the greatest impact will be on agriculture, and talked about alternative solutions, the most important of which is desalination of sea water. and sewage treatment.
The ministry's advisor, Aoun Diab, said, "Iraq is going through the most difficult year of water drought since 1930."
Diab added, "The ministry has strongly warned of the repercussions of this situation on most sectors, the most important of which is the agricultural sector." He pointed out, "Our work was focused on not depleting the water reserves available to us in the dams, and we give specific quantities according to a well-studied plan for the purpose of securing the priorities that we have, which is drinking water and human uses."
Diab stressed that "the current threat is focused on the areas that are supposed to be planted during the next winter season."
He noted, "The quantities of water entering the reservoirs are less than what comes out of them, and this means that we are facing a continuous decline in the strategic reserves."
Diab promised, "This thing is frightening, with weather forecasts from satellites in various countries, such as the American, European and Russian, that this fall will have limited and ineffective rain."
And he stated, "These facts have come before us, and we have asked that water users take into account the direction of rationalization and not extravagance."
Diab spoke about "measures that have been taken in developed countries such as Britain for rationalization, including not spraying gardens or using rubber tubes (sounds), even though these countries have less severe drought than in Iraq."
And he called, "to stop watering the gardens because the perennial tree takes its need from groundwater, and public gardens are devoid of roses that need watering." Diab pointed out, "There was an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture to resort to groundwater in order to compensate for part of the areas that we may lose in surface water, and there was support for the Ministry of Agriculture in good amounts to import sprinkler irrigation, and experience proved that it is a successful method and we achieved positive results." He described, “The statements made by some that drinking water will be cut off for citizens by 2030 or 2035 are exaggerated.”
Diab stated, "There is a strategic study for water and land that was prepared in 2015, which gave a complete vision of what will happen in 2035."
He continues, "Iraq has taken the worst possibility that Turkey will complete all its projects, which is what it is currently working on, and Syria and Iran as well. We will still have a specific amount of water that threatens agriculture, but what is allocated for drinking and human uses will remain."
Diab revealed, “The state has resorted to other options, including desalinating sea water and treating sewage return water, and many of the measures we are working on in order to secure part of the deficit as a result of the policies of neighboring countries.” He continued, "The governorates that are most vulnerable to the threat due to the water crisis are those at the ends of the rivers, such as Basra, Maysan, Dhi Qar and Muthanna, in addition to the marsh areas."
Diab concluded, "The ministry is with the tightening of procedures for removing abuses on the rivers, and there is interest in this aspect by supporting the security forces, but with all this we are exposed to a shortage in the southern governorates."
The ministry had confirmed earlier that the neighboring countries had not yet responded to Iraq's appeals for sharing the water damage.
