    Economy News - Baghdad
The General Company for Railways, one of the formations of the Ministry of Transport, confirmed today, Thursday, the trend to develop the railway network in Iraq and link it with the outlets of neighboring countries.
The director of the company's worker, Talib Al-Hussaini, said, "The government provided great support for the development of railways, so a contract was signed with an international company to return and submit a feasibility study and designs for the development of the railway network and linking all ports with neighboring countries, in addition to activating the great port of Faw, which will depend on Railways increased by 44%, which rivals the port of the Suez Canal.
Al-Husseini added, "The Turkish side has prepared its lands in preparation for the railway connection with Iraq, and there are ongoing discussions and meetings to determine the connection point."
He stressed that "the company is moving towards developing a railway network through an Italian company, and we are waiting for it to present the necessary studies and designs to determine the connection point with the Turkish side," noting that "within the terms of the contract, the final version will be submitted for the preparation of studies and designs at the end of this year."
He stated, "The history of railways in Iraq has passed 110 years, as the mechanisms, equipment and even the human cadre need renewal and development, and we are unable to implement any project because of the lack of financial allocations."
