On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of the Phenomenon, Iraq is the fourth in the world in high rates of poverty

On October 17 of each year, the United Nations celebrates the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, and talks about the results of plans and strategies to address this phenomenon. But in Iraq, the victims of poverty have increased due to corruption and waste of the country's resources and wealth, over the past years, to make the country at the forefront of the poorest countries, as international reports indicate.
dignity for all
The United Nations said that the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, this year, will bear the title “Dignity for All” to emphasize international commitments to achieve social justice, peace and benefit the planet.
Activists and those concerned with facing poverty consider that the slogan “dignity for all” confirms that human dignity is not only an inherent right, but is the basis for all other basic rights. Thus, “dignity” is not an abstract concept: it is the human right of every individual on this earth. Today, many people living in chronic poverty suffer from a lack of respect for their dignity.
In Iraq, over the course of 19 years, the authorities have wasted hundreds of billions of dollars while millions of citizens live in extreme poverty, and their livelihoods are narrowed in exchange for deprivation, marginalization, high prices, and the lack of the right to treatment, housing and other necessities of life.
Year after year, the gap in opportunity and income is sharply increasing and the gap is widening between a small group that controls the government and its entourage, and a majority that is poor or does not get enough right, according to what economists confirm.
No growth, no plans
The expert in economic affairs, Salam Sumaisem, believes that the problem of poverty in Iraq is no longer in its previous traditional form, as there are new developments that show the extent of the catastrophe of the phenomenon within society.
Sumaisem says to "The People's Way", "The International Monetary Fund is talking about a very large economic growth in Iraq, but in return there is a large growth in the size of poverty. This issue (poverty) has taken new standards that have entered into economic use and international organizations are using them, such as the so-called (multi-sided poverty),” pointing out that this type of poverty “is different from monetary poverty. Previously, the measure was through income, and the International Monetary Fund recognized the poverty of an individual whose income averaged $3.2, while the World Bank said that the poor were those whose income was $8.1. This issue is now different and has expanded a lot, and according to the latest standards of the latest statistics issued by the Ministry of Planning, even a fifth-class employee is considered poor.”
Iraq is fourth in the world
Sumaisem continues: “Now we do not calculate poverty from income alone, but rather from the citizen's need for housing, electricity, drinking water, food, medicine and all these things. From this point of view, the United Nations (ESCWA) organization issued a statistic that placed Iraq among the first four countries in the multi-sided high rates of poverty, adding that “the government is talking about economic growth, but it is not reflected in life, and this growth came from the monetary rise, which is not real.” Rather, because of the high amount of money from the sale of oil, there are no real development rates, nor the construction of bridges, roads, and hospitals, and we have not seen an improvement in the level of food, water and electricity. But there is a decline in everything, so where is the growth?”
The spokeswoman stresses that “the cash increase that Iraq received did not result in any increase in industrial and agricultural production. The government is talking about an increase in money due to the rise in global oil prices, and this is not growth.”
The expert believes that “political conflict is the main reason for what is happening because it leads to wrong economic policies and leads to an increase in poverty rates and the production of social in addition to economic problems such as youth delinquency, psychological pressures, class differences and crime rates,” calling for “the formulation of realistic, scientific economic policies far from the interactions.” political. Uncertainty surrounds the Iraqi economy, there is no clear economic policy and governments do not seek the assistance of economic experts. Whoever draws financial and economic policy is far from specialization, and this calls for reconsidering the current approach and inviting specialists to formulate a real national policy that does not revolve around oil prices and deepens the rentier economy.”
At the end of her speech, Sumaisem stresses that "the human economy is what must exist, because it shows interest in the life of the citizen and focuses on providing some requirements such as food and medicine, which are important matters."
Planning: we try to reduce the ratio
As for the official spokesman for the Ministry of Planning, Abdul-Zahra Al-Hindawi, he believes that a large percentage of the poor are close to breaking the poverty line, if adequate support is provided to them.
Al-Hindawi told "The People's Way", that "the ministry does not currently have accurate statistics on poverty in Iraq, and that the numbers that are published are from the previous year," noting that "there are preparations to conduct an economic and social survey in the coming weeks to obtain new data on poverty and its percentage." and geographical areas in which it is concentrated. He points out that "the ministry still relies on previous indicators to measure poverty rates, as it ranges between 22 to 25 percent, and that the Muthanna Governorate is the poorest among the provinces, at a rate of more than half, while the rates in the south are up to 30 percent, and are in the central regions. by 17 percent,” noting that “the indicators of poverty change according to economic, security, political and other conditions, and they are not fixed.”
So far, there is no real strategy to address poverty in Iraq, despite the high number of poor people, as all the programs of the influential forces that are still fighting for power lack real plans and clear strategies to address the phenomenon, except for some hollow slogans.
