British Institute: The Sadrists' continued enthusiasm to participate in the upcoming elections

Translation: Hamed Ahmed
A poll by a British institute showed that the Sadrist movement's supporters remained enthusiastic to participate in the upcoming elections, pointing out that their leader Muqtada al-Sadr met the leaders of the October uprising recently to exchange ideas with them, stressing that the two parties have not reached an alliance until the present time.
A report by the British Gattham House Institute for Studies, translated by Al-Mada, stated that “the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, even though he announced in August 2022 that he had retired from politics, it is unlikely that he would withdraw from the political system of Iraq or allow him to collapse into a civil war.” .
He added, "A poll of 1,000 people among the residents of Sadr City showed that 49% of them intend to participate in the upcoming elections, compared to only 27% who expressed their unwillingness to participate, stressing that the elections are more effective than protests in achieving change and reform."
The report pointed out that "when the Sadrist movement resorted to protesting again against the political system in 2022, its discourse toward the Tishreen movement shifted significantly in order to facilitate the settlement process."
He explained, "The leadership of the movement was clearly aware that, after its exit from Parliament, it requires the strategy of the protest movement to expand further beyond the Sadrist base, and leaders said that they hope to reshape the strategy that led to the remarkable electoral success in 2018."
And the report indicated that "Sadr spokesmen said that some of the leaders of the October protests visited al-Sadr in Najaf during the past two or three months and exchanged ideas with him, but they did not reach the stage of the alliance."
And he spoke about “the difference in the opinions of the Sadrists about the Tishreen protest movement, and Sadrists of all ages showed an attraction to the Tishreen movement, and 43 percent of them had positive attitudes about the Tishreen protests, compared to 49 percent of them expressing negative attitudes about the protest movement.”
The report emphasized that “these results indicate that the activity and rush of protest for the leadership of the Sadrist movement is not just an issue of elite bargaining, but rather is the result of the essence of the trends of the influential forces within the social base of the movement.”
And he stated, "The poll also showed that 39% of the Sadrist movement tended to vote for a party led by the Cherishers, compared to 79% who expressed their refusal to vote for a party led by the Cherniers."
The report added, "The position of the Sadrist movement on the elections, compared to the October and non-Sadr youth in general, the Sadrist base, as indicated by the poll, tends to put its trust in the political elections more than the protests in achieving change."
He stressed, "Almost 49% of Sadrist youths between the ages of 18 and 34 indicated that they would vote in the upcoming elections, compared to 27% of those surveyed who stated that they were not likely to vote."
The report added, "Within the overall context of this sample, 47 percent of the respondents indicated that they are likely to vote."
He went on to say that "these numbers are higher than the voter turnout, which was around 30%," noting that "71 percent of the residents of Sadr City who were surveyed indicated that they voted in the 2021 elections, which is higher than the percentage that was officially mentioned about their participation." .
The report continues, “Responses to additional questions included in the survey revealed that 49% of the current people definitely consider the elections as the most influential factor in achieving change and political reform from the protests, while only 22% indicated that protests are the most effective method in bringing about change.” .
And he added, "21 percent of those polled believed that protests and elections have an equal impact on achieving reform."
The report added, "The majority of Sadrists tend to consider the rush to protest and the election policy as complementary strategies, while the Chechens and non-Sadrist youth question the effectiveness of the elections, despite the efforts made by international workers to increase the voter turnout."
And he added, "These positions were further embodied in the October 2021 elections and their aftermath, and the Sadrists succeeded in terms of the number of seats, as well as in terms of increasing the enthusiasm of both the social base of the movement and its impulse to the election policy."
He stressed, "The Gatham House Institute indicates that its poll confirms in general that it is likely that the Sadrists' enthusiasm for the elections will remain with the current's dominance over its electoral stance with regard to the desire of voters to participate."
And the report went on, that «the poll also shows that the Sadrist base is still willing to participate in any future elections, despite the position of the current leader is unclear on this issue».
