Baghdad / Obelisk: The United Nations has warned of crises that are weighing on the labor market all over the world, noting that a sharp slowdown has begun, while Iraq is among the worst countries in the labor rights index in the world.
In a new report, the International Labor Organization has warned that on current trends global employment growth will deteriorate significantly in the last quarter of 2022.
With regard to Iraq, and in remedying the crisis, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, on Tuesday 11/01/2022, directed all ministers to prepare a government program that focuses on issues of unemployment, poverty, services, support for the economy and combating corruption.
In the face of this rapidly deteriorating situation, more coordinated efforts at the national and international levels will be needed to address the deeply worrisome global labor market situation and prevent a major general downturn in it, said Gilbert Hongbo, the new ILO Director-General.
Over the past years, Iraq has witnessed economic crises due to the political and security turmoil that the country has experienced, which was reflected in the public life of many citizens, including the youth sector, while those crises caused the closure of thousands of private projects that were a source of income for large numbers of Iraqis.
According to the International Federation of Workers' Rights Index in the world report, Iraq is among the worst countries in the workers' rights index in the world.
The economic expert, Manar Al-Obaidi, says that Iraq suffers from weak labor protection laws, weak security and retirement laws, and the randomness of the labor market.
Al-Sudani was Minister of Labor and Social Affairs and is well aware of the danger of unemployment in Iraq, and is likely to benefit from his experience in the ministry to develop plans to provide job opportunities for hundreds of thousands of unemployed people.
The former Iraqi Minister of Planning, Nuri al-Dulaimi believes that a heavy burden is being received by the Sudanese government, which requires all political and social actors to unite their efforts with the government towards the reconstruction and building of Iraq and the provision of services, and the unification of all activities in the public and private sectors towards providing services and employment of youth and confronting unemployment and corruption and replacing Security.
Activist Haider Fadel reminds that Iraq has been suffering from compound inflation since 2018, and has taken a gradual rise to the current year, and neither the Central Bank nor the Ministry of Finance had a future vision in dealing with that inflation as well as the various unemployment.
Returning to the ILO report, it was mentioned that job creation and job quality are declining amid the worsening energy and food security crises, rising inflation, tightening monetary policies and fears of an imminent global recession.
The report examines the best ways to deal with the crisis, and warns against simply responding to rising inflation and calls for a deep social dialogue to develop the policies needed to confront the slowdown in the labor market.
Policies should also focus on the broader implications for the labor market, institutions, and poverty in strategies to address rising prices.
The report warns that excessive policy tightening may cause undue damage to jobs and salaries in developed and developing countries.
The economic expert, Daoud Hashem, addresses Iraqi politicians, warning: “To our politicians 24/February 2022, the rules of the game have changed, a new global coup: the economy has become the engine, not politics.” Will they hear this call!!
