    [size=45]The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, urged new Twitter owner Elon Musk to ensure the social network respects human rights, in an open letter issued Saturday.
    [size=45]In his letter, Turk said that reports that Musk had fired the entire human rights team of the platform "was not, in my view, an encouraging start."[/size]
    [size=45]The UN Commissioner expressed "concern and fear about our digital public sphere and the role of Twitter in it."[/size]
    [size=45]Musk, the world's richest person, bought the platform a week ago in a controversial deal.[/size]
    [size=45]After completing his massive $44 billion acquisition, Musk quickly dissolved Twitter's board of directors and fired its CEO and senior managers.[/size]
    [size=45]On Friday, the company fired about half of its 7,500 employees.[/size]
    [size=45]"Like all companies, Twitter must understand the harms associated with its platform and take steps to remedy it," Volker Türk wrote.[/size]
    [size=45]“Respect for human rights should be a safety barrier for the use and development of the platform. In short, I invite you to ensure that human rights are central to managing Twitter under your leadership.”[/size]
    [size=45]Turk posted the open letter on Twitter, where he has more than 25,000 followers.[/size]

    [size=45]The commissioner mentioned six basic human rights principles and urged Elon Musk to adopt them in managing Twitter.[/size]
    [size=45]Among those principles are the protection of freedom of expression and privacy and the guarantee of transparency.[/size][/size]
