An international survey: Iraqis have the most feeling of inequality in the region
Translated by: Hamed Ahmed
An international survey showed that Iraqis are the most inequality in the region, stressing that corruption is the biggest challenge facing the country. A report by (Relief Web), translated by (Al-Mada), stated:
That “a survey conducted by the (ESCWA) Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia during the year 2022 included 10,000 people from ten Arab countries on the issue of social and economic equality and what is related to the availability of job opportunities and unemployment showed that Iraqis are the most pessimistic people about the lack of equality compared to the general average of the rest of the citizens the Arabs.”
The report added, "Less than a third of the respondents in Iraq indicated that they currently feel social and economic equality."
He pointed out that "only one third believes that social and economic equality will increase during the next five years."
And the report indicated that “two out of five believe that inequality will further deteriorate,” explaining that “the rate of pessimism among Iraqis regarding their current and future status regarding economic and social equality is the highest among citizens of other Arab countries.”
He noted, "The United Nations International Committee stated that the Arab region suffers from the highest levels of inequality in the world, which not only impedes economic development, but also undermines the process of progress towards the 2030 Agenda, and poses a threat to the state of social and political stability."
The report pointed out that “the organization stated that many countries in the Arab region experienced wars, low economic growth, limited economic and social capacity, widespread unemployment, an increase in the number of affected people, and an increase in inequality.”
And he continues, “Most of the residents of the region believe that the three main steps and options for improving the situation of social and economic equality are: first, by providing job opportunities for young people, second by combating corruption, and third, by increasing workers’ wages.”
And the report continues, “A survey conducted among Iraqi youth between the ages of 18 and 24 showed that three-quarters of them had a very negative view of the current situation of social and economic equality.”
And he added, "Two-thirds of the Iraqis polled said that providing job opportunities for young people is essential to addressing the problem of inequality."
The report emphasized that "while the Iraqis are firmly held, more than the rest of the Arab citizens in general, that creating job opportunities for young people is an essential and vital matter, their hope for this is less."
And he stressed, "Only two out of five believe that there will be more decent and productive jobs during the next five years."
And the report stated, "Most Iraqis, and in order to create more employment opportunities, identified that there is a need first to create more jobs in the private sector, secondly to provide more financial support to owners of small projects, and thirdly to reform the educational system to meet the needs of the market."
And he continued, "Three out of five men and women identified job creation in the private sector as a first priority over any other proposal to eliminate unemployment."
And the report added, “The government, and to support the creation of job opportunities in the private sector, will require it to first enhance the investment environment to enhance economic growth and secondly create decent job opportunities.”
He explained, "The last historical stage that Iraq went through, of battles and political turmoil, has worked to destabilize the private sector and impede economic development."
And the report went on to say that “67% of workers in the informal sector believe that the high employment rate in state departments and institutions causes more private sector job opportunities to be reduced.”
And he stressed, “23% of those polled stated that the biggest challenge facing Iraq is corruption,” stressing that “only 22% of Iraqis have confidence in the government in fighting corruption.”
While the report pointed out that "only 24% are convinced of the government's performance in this field," it stated that "Iraq ranks 157 in the Transparency Index for the year 2021 among the 180 most corrupt countries in the world."
He noted that "two out of five Iraqis stated that combating corruption is essential to addressing inequality."
The report warned that "the Iraqi youth are the most interested in the issue of corruption, which works to waste money and waste it at a time that can be used in the field of creating job opportunities, reducing poverty and moving forward towards economic and social development."
He called for "amending and revising the Iraqi Anti-Corruption Law to be in line with international standards, and then apply it accurately."
The report considered that “anti-corruption institutions, including the judiciary, need to provide them with more support and protect their independence.”
And the report continues, "Iraq, although it is a middle-income country, many of its citizens, especially the displaced, are still exposed to poverty, lack of food, and unequal access to health care and education."
He pointed out that "the current inflation in food prices has increased its impact on those with limited incomes from Iraqi families."
And the report went on, that "45% of Iraqis stated in 2021 that they ran out of food before they got money to buy more."
