Hardly a day goes by in Iraq in which suicide cases are announced among young people, both male and female, in various regions of the country, in a worrying indicator that requires greater attention to mental health, and while specialists attributed this to the repercussions of the unstable situation in Mesopotamia, They called for solutions to this disturbing phenomenon that ravages society.

The economic conditions are prominently behind the increase in suicides, according toThe Ministry of PlanningIt said earlier that "the unemployment rate in[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]It amounted to 16.5%, but the World Bank figures were in the exact opposite way, as they reached 36% last year. Motives of suicide by

the social researcherSamar Al-FailiYou see, suicide in[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]It is not considered a file, since most reports of death incidents are associated with excuses to observe customs and traditions.
Al-Faili spoke to "Jussoor" about careful research on the causes of the rise in suicides in the country[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], found that "my province[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]And the[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]They are at the forefront of the scene in this aspect, while the most prominent reasons were the economic conditions, in addition to the harassment that girls are exposed to in particular.”

As for how to treat this problem, Al-Faili says that it is done through specialized awareness programs provided by people with experience in this field. In addition, “the government is required to provide a real healthy environment for people who need treatment.

” Al-Faili added, “The youth category is the largest category in registering suicide,” attributing this to “the absence of civil rights and violations practiced in several fields, in addition to the lack of services and crises.” The economic and social ravages of society, whose impact is primarily borne by young people,” stressing that “the greatest responsibility rests with the state, because it is the entity concerned primarily with providing support and backing for this segment and allowing it to build society.”

The social researcher called on the private sector to "take its role by preparing projects, providing job opportunities, and benefiting from this important segment," stressing at the same time the role of humanitarian organizations, activists, and social and religious institutions in spreading awareness and educating, legally and socially, about the dangers of this phenomenon.

    Penalties prosecuting the instigators

from a legal point of view, the legal expert says,Ali Al TamimiArticle 408 of the Iraqi Penal Code punishes those who incite or assist a person to commit suicide with 7 years imprisonment, while there is no penalty for those who attempt suicide due to the uselessness of the punishment.

Al-Tamimi added, in contact with "Jusoor", that "he believes that those who attempt suicide should be placed in a sanatorium and only come out with supporting medical reports, as a good solution to treat him."

And he explained that "the prevalence of suicide is due to the lack of religious motivation, psychological and social motives, and the impact of means of communication and foreign soap operas, especially on adolescents."

Al-Tamimi continued, "Suicide remains a file of concern, and most of the failed attempts are not documented because of their families' efforts to hide the facts, which constitutes an embarrassment for them."

According to global official statistics, nearly 800,000 people die as a result of suicide every year, and each death corresponds to more than 20 suicide attempts, and there is one death recorded every second in the world due to suicide, and perhaps the Corona pandemic and its accompanying repercussions on the economic and health level The resulting problems at the family level increased the rate of escalation of cases in 2020.
