    Economy News - Baghdad
On Saturday, Minister of Industry and Minerals Khaled Battal revealed that there are about 40,000 "surplus" employees.
"The reality of the industry is very bitter, and there is a very heavy legacy from the accumulations of previous years," Battal said in a press conference held today at the Badoush Cement Factory, west of Mosul.
He added, "We have about 40,000 surplus employees in the ministry, and this is what makes it unable to secure sufficient salaries for them and depends on the Ministry of Finance for annual grants, and the Ministry of Industry owes hundreds of billions of dinars to the Ministry of Finance because of this matter."
Battal pointed out that "the Ministry of Industry has become more like the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, as it pays salaries to people who do not produce anything, and this is similar to what the unemployed get."
He stressed, "The ministry plans to proceed with merging companies and rearranging their facilities, and we may close some industrial facilities that there is no longer any point in rehabilitating them, such as old factories and factories for which there are no longer even spare parts, and the ministry is studying the option of going towards investment in a real way."
