    His Excellency the President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, received today, Sunday, November 27, 2022, at the Baghdad Palace, the Minister of Water Resources, Eng. Aoun Diab Abdullah.

    During the meeting, they discussed ways to address water scarcity and its effects on the overall public life, and the importance of developing plans to address Iraq's suffering from a decrease in the water level, and work to develop the water resources sector to face the climate changes that afflict the whole world.

    The Minister of Water Resources gave an explanation of the challenges represented by the impact of climate change and the lack of water imports from the source countries, and the procedures and plans set by the Ministry to overcome water scarcity.

    The problem of the dams that were built on the Tigris River in the lands of neighboring Turkey was discussed, where the minister explained the negative effects of the Ilisu and Sullivan dams and the Iraqi state’s point of view in not supporting the Turkish government’s plans to construct the Al-Jazra Dam, which is located south of the Ilisu Dam, referring to the Turkish side’s non-compliance with the 500 launch agreement. cubic meters since last April until now, which caused a huge shortage in the amount of water received. The minister indicated that the deficit suffered by the Haditha Dam amounted to 4.1 billion cubic meters.

    Minister Aoun Diab Abdullah also reviewed the ministry's plans to address the scarcity in the marshes by diverting 150 cubic meters of surplus rainwater, in an attempt to protect these water bodies from drought because of their importance and direct impact on the residents of the region, the environment, and fish and animal resources.

    Mr. President indicated that the Presidency of the Republic gives the water file a top priority, and will form a committee to follow up on this file, as it is an essential pillar for sustaining life, providing food security and stability, and achieving comprehensive development, adding that he will support all government efforts with neighboring Turkey and Iran to secure and organize fair water shares for all parties. As well as benefiting from strategic reports on improving the management of water resources in the country.

    The President of the Republic stressed the need to confront the water problem at all levels by addressing the abuses committed by the owners of fish ponds that affect the water shares between the governorates, resorting to modern irrigation methods, and using the Shatt al-Arab irrigation canal, in addition to the need to implement recommendations related to the issue of water.

    His Excellency also called on the Minister of Water Resources for the ministry to complete the lagging dam projects and to approach the Council of Ministers to establish a number of dams in the Kurdistan region and other regions of Iraq, to ​​store water and treat its scarcity during the years of drought.
    The President of the Republic promised to visit the Ministry of Water Resources and provide support to the Ministry in facing the challenges it faces.
