The Parliamentary Agriculture, Water and Marshes Committee confirmed today, Tuesday, the closure of 4 thousand poultry projects, while recommending the implementation of the decision to impose customs tariffs on imported eggs and poultry.
Committee member Ibtisam al-Hilali said, "Iraq owns nearly 6,000 poultry projects, but unfortunately, 4,000 projects have been stopped and workers laid off," noting that "previous decisions of the Ministry of Agriculture to open imports and not protect the local product negatively affected those projects." .
She added, "There was no protection for the local product in the past two years, in addition to the lack of control over smuggling that takes place in some border crossings," explaining that "the committee worked hard to stop imports due to the self-sufficiency of the egg and poultry product."
And she continued, "The committee demanded setting a customs tariff so that there would be a competitor for the local product," noting that "the Council of Ministers issued Resolution No. 138 of 2022 to set a customs tariff on the imported egg, poultry, and agricultural product, but the decision has not been implemented yet."
