    Economy News - Baghdad
Global progress towards energy efficiency has accelerated this year as a result of high energy prices and imbalances in fuel supplies, but it is still insufficient to achieve goals to combat climate change, according to a report by the International Energy Agency.
The Paris-based agency called on governments to prioritize efforts to improve energy efficiency in buildings and transportation, as ambitions to reduce emissions and limit rising temperatures cannot be met by focusing solely on expanding renewable energy production.
For his part, Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the agency, said in a statement, "The oil shocks of the 1970s prompted governments to move massively to achieve energy efficiency, which led to fundamental improvements in their efficiency in cars, appliances and buildings."
"In light of today's energy crisis, we are seeing indications that energy efficiency has become a priority again," he added.
According to the agency, there is preliminary data indicating that global investments in energy efficiency, such as heat pumps and building insulation, will rise 16 percent this year to $560 billion.
The investments have increased energy efficiency by 2 percent this year compared to last year, which is about double the rate for the past five years, but less than the 4 percent per year rate the agency says is needed this decade to reach zero emissions by 2050.
The agency expects to sell nearly three million heat pumps, which use mechanical energy powered by electricity rather than fossil fuels to heat and cool buildings, in Europe this year, double the units sold in 2019.
