Formation of a joint committee looking for radical solutions to the electricity crisis
Yesterday, Monday, the Parliamentary Energy Committee revealed the formation of a joint committee with the government to radically solve the electricity crisis, and talked about Chinese offers to establish thermal and gas stations. Committee member Suhaila Al-Sultani said in a press statement, "The parliamentary committee, through meetings, has reached the formation of a permanent cell that will work in stages in order to radically end the electricity problem in Iraq."
Al-Sultani added, "The new government wants to achieve progress in the field of electricity and energy, not only insurance."
She pointed out, "There are offers from solid Chinese companies to establish classic thermal or gas stations, or modern stations that depend on solar and wind energy."
And she continued, "Through the meetings that took place with Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani, his government will not resort to working with patchwork solutions."
Al-Sultani spoke about "the futility of electrical interconnection, whether with Saudi Arabia or other countries, because it only leads to energy stability and prevents the electrical system from collapsing, and then dispensing with it."
Al-Sultani went on to say that “purchasing energy through the electrical connection is completely useless and causes the state to lose a lot of money.”
Yesterday, the committee held a meeting chaired by Deputy Dakhil Radi, deputy head of the committee, and the presence of a number of its members, to discuss completing the amendment to the Ministry of Electricity Law.
A parliamentary statement received by (Al-Mada) added that “the committee discussed including the necessary amendments to the paragraphs of the law, including those related to regulating the involvement of local governments in investment and partnership between the public and private sectors in the fields of production and distribution, in addition to working on renewable energy production (solar and waste recycling).” .
He pointed out that “the committee’s inputs included a file of cooperation with countries regarding electrical interconnection, in a way that guarantees going towards increasing production and reforming the electrical system, adding the need for clarification and review of some materials to put the appropriate touches on them.”
And the statement went on, “The committee decided to confirm the required observations, discuss them with those concerned in the Ministry of Electricity, and listen to their opinions in order to reach the appropriate formulas.”
And the spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Musa, said in an interview with (Al-Mada) earlier this week, that “the electrical connection with the Turkish side has been completed by 100%,” noting that “the final operating agreement was signed after the lines were established, which was the completion of the 132 kV line ( Slopi - Fayda) passing through Mosul Island and the Cask 400 station.
Musa added that "part of the aforementioned lines extend across the territory of the Kurdistan region, and the regional government had remarkable and clear cooperation in this regard."
He pointed out, "The final operation agreement with Turkey was signed, provided that the first phase is 300 megawatts, to be paid for the benefit of the system in the northern governorates."
Moussa added, “However, the implementation was delayed, given that the Russian-Ukrainian war was clear on the rise in energy prices, and therefore the Turkish tariff prices are expensive and not commensurate with the ministry’s prices, and on this basis, the agreement was delayed.”
He pointed out, "The need for Iranian gas in supplying electric power to Iraq will remain dominant in the absence of a fuel plan.
