The Iraqi Association for the Defense of the Rights of Journalists called on the Iraqi Council of Representatives to stop the legal measures taken with the draft law on freedom of expression, because it contains many inaccuracies and errors that could expose freedom of the media and freedom of expression to great prejudice by the executive and judicial authorities, and that it is contrary to the text of Article 38 of the Iraqi constitution, which Freedom of the press and freedom of expression mandated.
The Iraqi Association for Defending the Rights of Journalists also called for substantial amendments to the text of the amended Iraqi Penal Law No. 111 of 1969, which constitutes a real threat to freedom of the press and freedom of expression, which is inconsistent with the Iraqi constitution. Ibrahim al-Sarraj, head of the Iraqi Association for Defending the Rights of Journalists, said that the Iraqi parliament deliberately marginalized non-governmental organizations defending freedom of the press and freedom of expression.
