Baghdad / Obelisk: Many people with experience and workers in the real estate sector say that prices  in Iraq are more expensive than Dubai, Riyadh, Doha and Istanbul. In some areas of the Iraqi capital, the price per square meter of a piece of land has reached an astronomical figure.
Observer of this matter, Munther Asaad, believes that investment in Iraq has turned into a big lie by spoiled contractors, as there is free (or almost free) land and funding from government banks that distorted the real estate market, and the housing initiative that violates the law of the Central Bank contributed to the rise in real estate prices because it increased The volume of demand in exchange for a deficit in housing units without economic calculations.
Iraq's efforts in the field of combating money laundering are still slow due to the lack of seriousness in the procedures, as well as its backwardness, and its lack of coordination with other countries to follow up on the increasing laundering activities in Iraq.
Financial experiences say to Al-Obelisk that Iraq lacks the appropriate tools to detect funds and assets acquired illegally, and also lacks cross-border coordination, the strength of political will, as well as the strength of the internal parties that launder money.
And the Integrity Commission said, on December 12, 2022, that Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon represent the most prominent countries to which funds from corruption cases in Iraq are smuggled, confirming that it continues its procedures to recover these funds despite the existence of some legal obstacles.
The director of the media center in the commission, Ali Muhammad, said, “The most prominent countries to which funds obtained from corruption were smuggled are the Kingdom of Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon, and a number of other regional countries, indicating that the commission’s procedures are continuing to recover those funds.”
In the countries of the world, there are banks that allow a lot of dirty money to flow into their coffers, which encourages money laundering in Iraq.
In many cases, the amounts go out to banks outside Iraq under the pretext of import and go to money laundering operations, while the regulatory authorities are unable to track them.
Iraqi parliamentarians filed a complaint against 28 banks violating the electronic switch decision within the money laundering law.
The Iraqi academic, Dr. Osama Shihab Al-Jaafari, explains how the state's regulatory agencies were unable to detect even a single money laundering crime, despite the huge amount of money derived from corruption crimes.
Al-Jaafari considered that this dirty money is laundered through investment projects and used to corrupt all state agencies, considering that the laundered money remains free, which means the continuation of the state’s corruption.
According to World Bank figures, between 20 and 40 billion dollars are embezzled annually by leaders of countries, governments, or corrupt officials, and hidden in bank accounts around the world, and Iraqi participation in this global crime has increased.
Iraqi law punishes with 15 years imprisonment for those who carry out the transfer resulting from money laundering.
Hashem al-Baghdadi, who is interested in Iraqi affairs, considered that some banks are working to sabotage the Iraqi economy and laundering money and smuggling it abroad.
The follower of the Iraqi affairs, Zaid Al-Hamdani, indicates that smuggling money outside Iraq has become very difficult, so the laundered money went to the inside, and there was massive inflation and an unreasonable rise in prices.
