Finally, Iraqi officials and parliamentarians revealed that about half of the population of Al-Qadisiyah governorate, in the south of the country, lives below the poverty line, after the governorate was among the richest due to its agricultural and industrial production.

Al-Qadisiyah, with its center (Diwaniyah), is one of the poorest governorates in Iraq, with a rate of 49 percent, according to the latest statistics of the Ministry of Planning this year. The statistics showed that the number of poor people in all of Iraq exceeds 10 million people, and represents almost a quarter of the population, distributed in different and different proportions from one governorate to another according to the economic and social status of each governorate.
    The decline of agriculture
A member of the Iraqi Parliament representing Al-Qadisiyah Governorate, Duha Al-Qaisar, confirmed that about half of the governorate's population lives below the poverty line, and that agriculture in the governorate has become almost non-existent.

Al-Qaisar said, in a press statement, that the governorate is among the poor, and that it does not have economic and oil development projects or border crossings through which unemployed youth can be employed.
She warned that poverty and unemployment rates are constantly increasing, noting that the unemployed and those with low living standards represent the largest group and are vulnerable to slipping into the cycle of poverty. The local administration of Al-Qadisiyah governorate revealed that poverty has risen to record levels, and it ranks second at the level of Iraq's governorates in terms of poverty and unemployment rates.
    increased poverty
The deputy governor of Al-Qadisiyah, Faris Wannas, said that the poverty rate in the province will reach more than 50 percent during the coming period, due to the deterioration of the economic situation, which was largely reflected in the living conditions of citizens.
In his interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, Wannas added that the governorate is agricultural, and agriculture constitutes the largest proportion of its population's economic revenues.
According to Wanas, the reasons for the increase in poverty and the deterioration of the living conditions of the population are multiple, including the lack of agricultural support, the high prices of fertilizers and agricultural machinery, in addition to water scarcity and high levels of drought.
Wanas revealed that the unemployment rate in the province exceeds 18 percent, and the rate is very high compared to the rest of the provinces of Iraq, as the province does not have strategic projects that can absorb the labor force.
He stressed that the sums that reach the provincial treasury from the general budget and the development of the regions are negligible and do not meet the local need, noting that the petrodollar amounts that reach the province do not exceed 3 billion Iraqi dinars (one dollar = about 1458 dinars), which are spent on establishing health centers. and schools.
Oil revenues witnessed a huge jump, as the "SOMO" Holding Company, the government arm for exporting Iraqi oil, said that the revenues from selling oil during the past nine months amounted to more than $90 billion.
A company statement stated that "these revenues increased from the same period last year by 70.6 percent, with financial revenues amounting to about $52.981 billion."
The deputy governor of Al-Qadisiyah, Fares Wannas, said that the poverty rate in the province will reach more than 50 percent during the coming period.
Wanas called on the Iraqi government to provide the necessary support for the province, and to work on establishing industrial and strategic projects to lift the province out of poverty and unemployment.
    county economy
The southern governorate contains some large factories belonging to the state, such as the Diwaniyah dairy factory, the rubber and tire industries factory, and the spinning and weaving factory. It also contains a number of privately owned factories such as bricks and crackers, in addition to poultry fields and artificial fish breeding lakes, in addition to the presence of the Shinafia oil refinery.
In this context, the economic researcher, Abd al-Salam Hassan, said that the governorate of Al-Qadisiyah is considered the agricultural capital of Iraq, in addition to the presence of a number of local industries, and its residents depend on agriculture and industry supported by the state through processing and marketing operations, and these two sectors were considered among the most important sectors. sustainability of the local economy.
Hassan criticized, through his interview with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, the Iraqi state's declining role in supporting these sectors, accusing influential parties working according to international agendas of working to obstruct the rise of Iraqi economic sectors, including agricultural and industrial ones, in Al-Qadisiyah Governorate.
He added that drought and lack of support are among the most important factors in the decline in agricultural levels in the province, which has largely led to an increase in poverty in all provinces of Iraq, including Al-Qadisiyah.
Hassan stressed the importance of confronting poverty, which reflects negatively on the social reality, by supporting the private sectors and small projects, as well as supporting the marketing of production and benefiting from the technical and scientific expertise that characterizes the people of the province.
