Shafaq News/ The Association for the Defense of Tenants' Rights in Kurdistan Region stated today, Thursday, that although the regional government granted licenses for the completion of nearly 250,000 housing units in Kurdistan, the situation of tenants is getting worse year after year.
The head of the association, Barham Qardaghi, said during a press conference held today, which was attended by Shafaq News Agency in Sulaymaniyah, that the government granted licenses for the completion of 240,000 housing units through the Investment Authority, but these units did not address (1-10) percent of the housing problem in Kurdistan.

He added that all these housing units were delivered and used for well-to-do people, but the real tenants did not benefit from them.
Qardaghi also indicated that the Parliament of Kurdistan was unable to activate Law No. (7) for tenants, and until now work is being done in accordance with the general law (1979), and for this reason the situation of tenants is heading year after year for the worse.
Regarding the governmental project launched by the regional government to ban 20,000 housing units in Kurdistan, including (5,200) for Sulaymaniyah, the head of the association saw that it "will not go to the real beneficiaries because of the policy of investors in Sulaymaniyah, behind whom influential parties stand.
On the course of the Sulaymaniyah Municipality in dealing with the housing crisis, Qardaghi stated that the Sulaymaniyah Municipality Presidency was not serious in dealing with the crisis, and plots of land were allocated to some investors in the areas of Taslujah and Tangro, which are not suitable for building housing units.
The president of the association talked about the problem of high wages for housing units, and attributed the problem to several reasons, the most important of which is the law followed by the government in imposing water, electricity and taxes on the owner of the property, as well as the large number of displaced Arabs in Kurdistan.
Qardaghi continued by saying that 32,000 Arab citizens live in the region, and there are 30,000 displaced child births in Kurdistan, 179 schools have been built for them, and (682) thousand housing units have been owned for Arab brothers, and they now represent 21% of the region's population, and if the percentage reaches 30 % It is their right to claim seats in the provincial councils.
Regarding the two housing projects set up by the Ministry of Municipalities in Kurdistan, which have been completed 100% since 2012, the head of the association said that due to the failure to provide services to them by 50%, the two projects were disrupted.
