Baghdad / Obelisk: Former Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi issued, on Wednesday 28/12/2022, a detailed statement, the first of its kind since he left office more than two months ago, indicating that measures were taken in our governmental era to protect social segments away from extortion and coercion.
Al-Kadhimi said, in a statement received by Al-Masalla: There have been recent talks about violations that occurred during my period of service to the Iraqi people as Prime Minister, and I would like in this regard to mention the following, in addition to recent developments regarding the rise in the exchange rate of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar:
1- We had paid great attention to caring for human rights, since the first years that followed the fall of the defunct regime and with our shouldering of national responsibilities, we worked to prevent any violations, before, during and after the investigations, and we put in place clear practical mechanisms for this purpose, benefiting from our previous experiences for this purpose. Documenting the testimonies of the victims of the former regime, in the Iraqi Memory Project and other institutions concerned with human rights, with which we were honored to work during the days of the Iraqi opposition before 2003.
2- In 2020, we formed an anti-corruption committee (Diwani Order Committee No. 29 of 2020) in response to popular demands. The committee worked, officially, in accordance with judicial decisions. No arrest or arrest warrant was issued except by order of the competent judge, and the same applies to all successive rulings. The committee has achieved success in curbing rampant corruption in state institutions, in accordance with the laws in force.
3- The committee was subject to continuous monitoring by the concerned oversight institutions, and the Public Prosecution issued a detailed report on it in 2021, which acknowledged its commitment to applying all international human rights standards stipulated in the Iraqi constitution. As for the allegation of violations, it requires significant legal evidence, and this is what was not available in this regard at all.
4- Likewise, there are talks about financial violations, which we officially disclosed in our time, and we were firm in preventing them, and we formed investigation committees in their regard, and all evidence, documents and clues were presented to the concerned judicial authorities that issued their rulings against the corrupt and transgressors, and we hope to continue the investigations and follow-up on them. Reveal the whole truth to public opinion, local, regional and international, and return all funds to their legal places.
5- With regard to the rise in the exchange rate of the dollar against the dinar, while we affirm the need for cooperation between the public sector, state institutions, and the private sector and its ramifications, we reject the growing populist discourse, which lacks accurate information and facts, because it pushes the crisis to more complexity.
Al-Kadhimi continued, “Protecting the citizen’s livelihood and living stability requires all of us to assume national, human and moral responsibility to improve work mechanisms and protect public interests.” Therefore, we call on those concerned to maintain the stability of the exchange rate, reduce monetary chaos, control large financial withdrawals, reduce the level of inflation, and prevent any smuggling of hard currency out of Iraq.
Al-Kazemi called on the current government to continue carrying out its duties and responsibilities, and on all organizations and institutions interested in human rights and the honorable Iraqi citizen, to follow up on possible violations, welcoming support for these projects to reveal the truth and fully lift the ambiguities of all related files. Also, it stresses the need to take the necessary measures. To protect the various social strata and our national economy, away from bidding, flattery and extortion.
