This comes amid hopes that the conference will have an impact on alleviating the water crisis the country suffers from.
According to Ali Radi, a spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources, " [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] will host, next February, the regional urban water conference," stressing in statements to reporters in the capital, Baghdad, today, Friday, that "Iraq will attend the conference with a high-level delegation."
Radi added, "The date of the regional conference and the meetings that will be held between Iraq and Iran on its sidelines have not yet been determined," noting that "one of the files that the Iraqi delegation will discuss at the conference is the file of Iraq's share of the water coming from the rivers shared with Iran."
Iraq is trying to face the suffocating water crisis by taking advantage of rain water. And the Ministry of Water Resources stated in a statement that “the rains (which fell the day before yesterday) will contribute to enhancing the drainage of the Tigris River and bringing it to the southern governorates to meet all requirements, especially the second irrigation of winter cultivation, securing water for areas that suffered from water scarcity, and strengthening the Hawizeh marshes and marshes.” Al-Wusta and Marsh Abu Zarek, and improving the environment of the Shatt Al-Arab.
In its same statement, the ministry added that “the average rainfall in Diyala governorate amounted to 22 millimeters,” indicating that “these rains resulted in torrential rains in the direction of Hamrin Dam Lake, which will be used to enhance the water reserves of the dam. As for the eastern side of the country, it will return.” Floods from Iran in the rivers shared with it in the provinces of Wasit and Maysan, which will also be used to enhance the reality of the Iraqi marshes.

The ministry stated that the torrents formed in the valleys of the western region of the country, and some of these torrents increased the drainage of the Euphrates River, while the other part directed towards the Habbaniyah and Razzaza lakes. The rainwater that fell in the governorates of Anbar, Babel, Najaf and Muthanna will also be utilized with the aim of "enhancing water releases in the Euphrates River towards the Hammar and Central Marshes, which have suffered from scarcity during the past period," noting that "the amounts of rain in the Ramadi Dam amounted to 30 mm and in The Kufa Dam is 20 millimeters.
And the Ministry of Water Resources added that "the wave of rain and torrential rains led to relieving pressure on consumption and surface water, which gave the ministry flexibility to implement its plans for water releases to preserve water storage to secure all needs and for all governorates," noting that "all ministry departments were instructed to cooperate with Municipal departments in all governorates to relieve the bottlenecks caused by the rains.
Iraq had reduced the area of land included in the seasonal agricultural plan by half, while certain provinces were completely excluded from the plan, due to an unprecedented drought that the country has been suffering from, for several years as a result of Iran cutting off the tributaries of the Tigris River and Turkey reducing the share of Iraqi water. Previous Iraqi governments have hinted several times to resort to international institutions to obtain water from Iran, according to water-sharing agreements, but they have not taken any step towards internationalizing the file despite Iran's rejection of any solutions proposed by Iraq.
