    Alsumaria News - Internationals

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) issued the emergency watch list for the year 2023. It is a global list of conflicts and humanitarian crises that were monitored in 20 countries, and it is expected that their conditions will deteriorate further during the new year.

The committee reviews the performance of countries on crisis watch lists from previous years. Over the past 10 years, there has been an exponential increase in urgent needs, overwhelmingly in the countries on the Watch List 2023. The number of people in need of humanitarian assistance has increased from 81 million in 2014 to 339.2 million in 2023. The 20 countries on the list represent 90% of those in need of humanitarian aid around the world. According to the Rescue Committee report, the main reason for the alarming new record levels of humanitarian needs is that there are three main factors accelerating the crises, such as armed conflict, climate change, and economic turmoil.

Displaced people, women and girls, and LGBTQI communities are often the hardest hit. For example, it is estimated that 80% of those displaced by climate change are women and girls. This population also faces a growing gap between their needs and the support provided. Ten years ago, humanitarian operations were underfunded by $3 billion. In 2022, the gap has increased to $27 billion in funding shortfalls. Without humanitarian assistance, the most vulnerable people will face increased risks of gender-based violence, child marriage and child labour, exploitation and abuse as resources become scarce.

In second place is Ethiopia, which is heading for a sixth consecutive season of failed rains, which could prolong a drought already affecting 24 million people. At the same time, various conflicts across the country are disrupting life and preventing humanitarian organizations from providing aid.

Third, Afghanistan came, after it was ranked first in the 2022 watch list, but declined in 2023, not because conditions have improved, but because the situation in East Africa is very dangerous. It has been more than a year since the takeover[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]On power, Afghans are still in a state of economic collapse. With almost the entire population now living in poverty and preparing for another long winter, increased humanitarian needs present a risk in 2023.

The Republic of[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]Democracy is in fourth place. More than 100 armed groups are fighting for control of Sharq[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.], which fueled a crisis that lasted for decades. Citizens are often targeted. After nearly 10 years of dormancy, the March 23rd group launched a new offensive in 2022, forcing families to flee their homes and disrupting humanitarian aid. But major disease outbreaks including measles, malaria and Ebola continue to threaten the already weakened healthcare system, putting many lives at risk.

Yemen ranked fifth on the list, as the crisis is likely to aggravate within the eight-year-old conflict between armed groups and government forces without a solution. While a ceasefire reduced fighting for several months, it collapsed in October and failed to mitigate the economic and health impacts of the conflict. Humanitarian funding has lagged behind. As it stands, 80% of the population lives in extreme poverty and 2.2 million children suffer from acute malnutrition.
