Controversy over the exclusion of independents from parliamentary committees

The statements of a number of deputies that accompanied the process of reconfiguring the committees in the House of Representatives in last week’s session revealed the return of political differences within the parliament regarding the balance of power and blocs, while observers and politicians warned against the exclusion and marginalization of independent representatives and their removal from those committees.
Representative Karwan Ali called for dealing calmly and wisely with this problem, revealing the pledge of the Speaker of Parliament to intervene personally to calm the atmosphere, after tension occurred within the session that witnessed the change of parliamentary committees.
Ali told Al-Sabah that the problem of changing parliamentary committees and removing deputies from them "needs to be dealt with wisely and calmly, because independent deputies are an important part of the democratic process and have a positive role in parliament, and this issue must be dealt with on the basis of the parliament's internal system." He added that Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi "pledged during the session to solve this problem in his personal capacity and that he would make an effort in that," noting that "this is not an important problem, but neglecting it will lead to its exacerbation."
Ali - a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan - added that "according to the internal system of parliament, the distribution of representatives among the permanent committees must be according to the personal desire of the representative, his competence and experience," and pointed out that "the changes in the parliamentary committees were not based on an official request." but for political reasons.” He concluded by saying, “The session witnessed tension and an escalation of positions.”
