Dhi Qar: Resumption of production in an oil field with an initial capacity of 10 thousand barrels per day

Dhi Qar / Hussein Al-Amel
The Dhi Qar Oil Company announced the resumption of work in the Sabbah field, south of Nasiriyah, with a production of 10,000 barrels per day, reaching 25,000 barrels during the current year, noting that the field, which has stopped working since 2019, has been modernized with national expertise to operate in an automatic way instead of manually.
The Director General of the Dhi Qar Oil Company, Eng. Ali Khudair Al-Aboudi, said in an interview with (Al-Mada) that, “The Subah field is considered one of the promising oil fields that are managed by the National Oil Company (the National Effort).”
Al-Aboudi added, "The production operations have been modernized according to what was previously planned, and in cooperation between the Dhi Qar Oil Company, the Oil Projects Company and other supporting parties."
He pointed out that “the oil production in the field has become automatic, starting from the well complex until the location of the final production torch, instead of the old manual method.” He considered “the automatic operation of the field a national achievement, as it was done by Iraqi hands,” and praised “Iraqi expertise in this field.” He described it as “very good”.
Al-Aboudi talked about “completing the full automation operations in the field and starting to operate successfully at 10,000 barrels per day, gradually reaching 25,000 barrels.”
And he noted, "Raising the production ceiling in the field requires obtaining the approval of the Ministry of Oil, since the volume of national production takes into account the country's agreements with OPEC."
Al-Aboudi stressed that “the planned production of the field ranges between 70-75 thousand barrels per day,” adding that “its design capacity is estimated at 100 thousand barrels, which requires drilling additional wells that the company is working on in the future.”
And he finds, “The field’s production will add larger quantities to the production of the Dhi Qar Oil Company, support the national economy, and enhance the governorate’s budget through petro-dollar allocations, as well as providing more job opportunities.”
On the possibility of benefiting from gas associated with oil production in the Sobha field, Al-Aboudi said, “The oil production station in the field includes integrated gas facilities to deal with associated gas, and it requires only some simple requirements that can be met through the support of the South Gas Company to launch gas production operations.” .
He expressed his hope that “this project will receive the required attention and the financial support necessary for its operation to enhance gas production in the governorate, which has begun to equip electricity production stations with gas.”
Al-Aboudi noted, "The Dhi Qar Oil Company is moving forward in discussing prospects for cooperation from the South Gas Company to complete the plan to produce gas from the Sobha field."
It is noteworthy that the first inauguration of oil production in the Sobha field took place in 2018 in an initial and manual manner, but it was soon stopped in 2019 for technical reasons due to the specifications of high salinity that affect the quality of the oil, resulting from the aging of the water treatment unit associated with oil production. Modernization of this joint by the Oil Projects Company through the installation of automatic systems.
For his part, the Director General of the Oil Projects Company, Shaker Mahmoud Al-Saadi, appreciated the efforts of the Dhi Qar Oil Company cadres in supporting the completion of this important step, stressing that it contributes to raising the volume and efficiency of production.
He indicated, in a press statement followed by (Al-Mada), that “work continued over the past period, and the effort resulted in restarting the field, which will be automatic and bypass the technical problems that appeared in the previous period.”
In turn, the director of the projects authority in the Dhi Qar Oil Company, Jabbar Karim, confirmed that "the field in its new look will add from 10 to 25 thousand barrels per day."
Karim continued, "The new rehabilitation process addressed the technical problems that caused work to stop last time, especially after the completion of an isolation bank for wet oil." The Dhi Qar Oil Company revealed on (November 27, 2022) a plan to launch oil production in the Sabbah field in late 2022 at a rate of 25,000 barrels per day, confirming that it will proceed with the rehabilitation and development of the oil fields.
The Dhi Qar governorate includes many oil fields, most notably the Nasiriyah oil field, which is the largest in the governorate. It comes after it in terms of importance, the Al-Gharf oil field, the Abu Amoud field (Al-Rafidain) and the Sabbah field. There is also an exploration patch bearing the number 10, and this patch is shared between Dhi Qar and Al-Muthanna. It was transferred a few years ago to a consortium of oil exploration consisting of Lukoil and Japan's Japex.
The production capacity in the oil fields in Dhi Qar Governorate is more than 250,000 barrels per day, distributed by more than 150,000 barrels from the Al-Gharraf field and 100,000 barrels from the Nasiriyah field. Between 50-60 thousand barrels in the Nasiriyah field, as it was decided to reduce production in accordance with Iraq's obligations with OPEC.
The Dhi Qar Oil Company announced, in the fourth quarter of last year, the continuation of work to raise the production rates of associated gas in the fields of Nasiriyah and Al-Gharf from 20 million standard cubic feet (Maqmaq) currently to 200 million standard cubic feet through the contract signed between the gas company. South with the American company Baker Hughes.
