On Wednesday, the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, considered the Federal Court's decision unlawful for the Iraqi government to send the salaries of the region's employees unfairly, pointing out that this decision targets the political process and the political agreement upon which the new Iraqi government was formed.
Barzani said in a statement, “The decision of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court, which was issued today and ruled that the payment of financial dues and salaries of Kurdistan Region employees by the Iraqi federal government in the years 2021 and 2022 is not correct, is an absolutely unfair and unfair decision. This decision does not only target wage earners and the people of Kurdistan who are Iraqi citizens, but rather targets the entire process and political stability, and the agreement under which the new Iraqi federal government was formed.
He added, "Iraq has gone through a long, complex and unstable political process until a government was finally born in Baghdad on which the people of Iraq held hope for a stage of stability and a better future. All expectations were for the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court to protect the interests of all components of Iraq and take into account the political circumstances and not turn it into a means to sabotage the opportunity and the positive atmosphere that was created to solve the country’s problems, especially the problems of Erbil and Baghdad, and not to endanger the political stability in Iraq!
He continued, "The decision of the Iraqi Supreme Federal Court at this time is nothing but suspicious and raises dozens of great question marks. It also raises the issue of urgency in issuing a new law to reconfigure the court as an important and major part of the agreement concluded between the political parties to form the new Iraqi federal government."
Today, Wednesday, the Federal Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional for the Federal Council of Ministers to send sums of money to finance the monthly salaries of employees and workers in the public sector in the Kurdistan Region.
The Kurdistan Regional Government considered the decision to be “unfair,” a flagrant violation of the constitution, and a violation of the agreement to form the Iraqi government.
The regional government called on the federal government not to submit to this decision, and to fulfill the promises it made to send financial dues to the Kurdistan Region.
