New Karbala.. an investment project that has stopped since 2016

In June of 2016, the Karbala governorate witnessed the launch of the "first step" of the new Karbala city investment project, which is to be built on an area of 5,700 dunums and at a cost of more than $9.5 billion, with the hope that this project will change the urban and touristic face of the holy city.
This important and vital project remained unimplemented without any justification, while specialists in tourism affairs called on the government to resume this project again due to its extreme importance to the urban and tourism aspects.
This project was designed to be one of the projects with integrated services and at an advanced level in line with the modern services provided by contemporary technologies such as housing, tourism and entertainment.
The specialist in economic affairs, Adel Al-Hindawi, stated that "the increasing numbers of people visiting the holy city of Karbala require speeding up the implementation of the Karbala investment project, which has been suspended for years without justification, and which needs the support of the governorate to provide elements to attract tourists to the city, which in turn supports the national economy and the federal budget."
He added that "the area of the project is estimated at 5,700 dunums, and includes 128 investment opportunities for various activities," pointing out the importance of "all the holy cities building new cities to serve the masses of tourists who visit the Holy City throughout the year."
Hasan al-Sadoun, a specialist in tourism affairs, confirmed to Al-Sabah that "the tourism sector represents the most prominent outlet for the multiplicity of revenues in the country, especially religious tourism, which we must start from first because there is a large number of people visiting the holy shrines in Iraq." He pointed out that "the city of Karbala represents a first destination for tourists, followed by other cities, which necessitates that we provide tourism infrastructure in this city and we can benefit from international experiences in this field." In turn, the specialist in tourism affairs, Mustafa Hassan Abdul Karim, explained in an interview with "Al-Sabah" that "Iraq must be a destination for world tourists, and there has become a need to organize its internal tourism sector through the cooperation of the private and public sectors concerned with this important joint in Iraq and make their efforts integrated to create a resource Permanent financial through tourism, and religious tourism can have the most prominent role at this time, due to the ease of developing this sector.
And he hinted that "Iraq possesses the elements of building an effective tourism sector at the level of the region and the world, due to the presence of tourist sites of interest to most of the world's population, and sites dating back to time periods that go back in time and can be a global tourist destination." And he indicated that "tourism is an important source for the development of the national economy and a gateway to peace and security," calling for the importance of having bilateral agreements with these companies in the field of promoting tourists to the marshlands, which are considered one of the distinctive wetland sites in the world.
