The Ministry of Education said that it did not have accurate figures or statistics on the number of illiterate people in the country, and it depended on that a general population census be conducted by the Ministry of Planning.
The official spokesman for the executive body for literacy, Moayad Al-Obeidi, told Al-Sabah: What is announced on websites and television channels regarding the presence of 12 million illiterate people in the country is estimated and unofficial statistics, because it was not issued by the Ministry of Planning as the authority responsible for announcing the true proportions. for their numbers by conducting a general census of the population.
He pointed out that the ministry continues to attract illiterates in literacy centers to obtain free education throughout the country and a certificate equivalent to the fourth primary certificate. Al-Obeidi added that the agency has worked over the last ten years since the launch of the illiteracy campaign to target age groups of 15 years and over, and the number of graduates from the centers has reached about two million and 250 thousand male and female students.
