    Economy News-Baghdad
Today, Monday, the director of the Iraqi Political Economic Center, Wissam Hammal Al-Helou, revealed the numbers of Iraqis who traveled to India for the purpose of treatment during the last three years and the amount of what they spent, pointing out that their lack of confidence in the dilapidated health system due to confusion and corruption drains huge amounts of hard currency.
Al-Helou said in a statement, "The total number amounted to 57,275 thousand, according to the latest official statistics, distributed by 15,596 thousand in 2020 and 15,120 thousand in 2021, while it reached 26,559 thousand in the past year 2022, in which the numbers increased as a result of easing the procedures of the Corona pandemic."
He added, "Iraqis prefer India as a medical destination because of the ease of procedures followed by the Indian embassy in issuing visas in Baghdad and the provinces, which do not exceed 24 hours, as well as their confidence in hospitals there and the low prices of operations compared to other countries."
He continued, "The Iraqi pays 83 dollars to issue a visa, and the total amounts paid to obtain it during the past three years amounted to 4,753,825 million dollars," noting that "the rate of travelers with each patient is one or two companions."
He pointed out that "the costs of conducting operations amount to a minimum of 5,000-8,000 dollars, and rise to higher numbers according to the type of operation, in addition to the costs of booking tickets, hotels, and transportation, at a total expenditure rate ranging between 10-15 thousand dollars, and it naturally increases, as we mentioned above, according to the type of operation."
He pointed out, "With a simple calculation, if we want to multiply the total number of travelers, which is more than 57 thousand, and say that each of them spent no more than 10 thousand as a total amount, then the final number will be more than 570 million dollars of hard currency that the Iraqis spent for treatment in India within 3 years." And if we wanted to say that a third of the number spent $15,000 or more for each patient, the final figure would exceed $670 million and reach perhaps $700 million that left Iraq in just 3 years for treatment in India.
He emphasized that "Iraqis also spend huge sums of money for treatment in Turkey, Iran and other countries due to lack of confidence in the dilapidated health system, which requires the government to work seriously to develop the health system, since the development of countries is measured by the size of the development of this system, which needs modern and advanced projects and hospitals in all provinces with expertise." required of doctors and health personnel with the completion of current projects whose assets have been subjected to extinction in order to accommodate the increasing number of patients with the increase in the population of Iraq, which exceeded 42 million, according to the latest statistics.
Al-Hilu believed that "the rampant corruption in previous governments and the parties' sharing of state resources and dealing with them as spoils is what hindered the development of the Iraqi health system and made it late and unable to gain the confidence of citizens, which requires the current government, if it is serious about its work and in implementation of its government program, to start striking corruption in the system." health care before it puts the necessary plans to develop it, because corruption will not allow its steps to progress.”
