Baghdad - Nas
Once again, there is talk about outlets belonging to factions outside the control of the government, against the backdrop of targeting a convoy, the largest in the last three years, across Iraqi territory towards Syria, according to the Iraqi newspaper Al-Mada.
So far, the government has not commented on these reports or the armed groups that call themselves the "resistance" and which often accuse Israel of such targeting.
These incidents at this time, according to some of the newspaper's sources, may cause embarrassment to the coordination framework that is trying to restore its relationship with the United States.
Also, the government, within the political agreement concluded with the so-called "State Administration Coalition", has pledged to remove the factions from the western cities.
And about what happened on the border with Syria, a local official in Anbar told Al-Mada, "A few hours before the incident, there was an intense flight of aircraft in the western parts of the province."
And the official, who asked not to be named, said: "Residents of Al-Qaim district, close to the border strip, heard the sound of violent explosions after midnight from Sunday to Monday."
And it was reported that more than 20 trucks were targeted that night, and it is expected that they were transporting weapons from Iraq to Syria, according to what Syrian sources said.
The local official in Anbar added, "There is information about the existence of a port belonging to the factions, far from the control of the government, called the railway port on the border strip with Syria, but we are not sure of its actual existence."
And he continues: "If the information about the number of these trucks is correct, then it will be the largest transfer that took place during the years that followed the emergence of the factions in Anbar after getting rid of ISIS in 2017."
In addition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights counted the killing of “seven truck drivers and their escorts of non-Syrian nationalities,” in the raid launched by “unidentified aircraft.”
"The trucks were transporting Iranian weapons," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.
He reported that at least two similar convoys entered this week from Iraq. They unloaded their cargo in the city of Al-Mayadeen, and it is likely that they transferred "advanced weapons" to groups loyal to Tehran.
On the other hand, the local Sham FM radio reported that "unidentified warplanes targeted, with a number of raids, six (refrigerated) trucks, which were parked near the village of Al-Hari, east of Al-Bukamal, after crossing the border gate shared with Iraq."
Activist Omar Abu Laila Omar, who documents the situation in Deir ez-Zor on his website "Deir ez-Zor 24," said that the raids "targeted the headquarters of pro-Tehran groups," and added, "There is great destruction in the targeted places."
The Syrian city of Albu Kamal is only a few kilometers away from the Iraqi district of Al-Qaim, while a number of factions that arrived in Anbar in 2016 spread along the borders between the two countries.
The government or the factions did not issue any comment on the incident, while an informed politician says that "these incidents will increase the crisis of confidence between the government and the United States."
The latest raid came days after an American citizen working in the field of relief was killed by unknown gunmen in central Baghdad.
In 2021, the unknown aircraft carried out 3 raids, one of which was admitted by the Al-Fateh Alliance led by Hadi Al-Amiri that the attack targeted members of the crowd, only 3 days after the march attack on the Hariri base in Erbil, which includes American advisors.
In June of the same year, leaders of the factions said that Israel was behind the bombing of the sites of what it described as the "resistance" on the border with Syria. The attack took place after Iraqi sources revealed to (Al-Mada) at the time the involvement of Iraqi factions in the bombing of the American Al-Shaddadi base in Syria.
In February of 2021, buildings belonging to Iranian factions were bombed, according to statements by the United States, which said that a raid took place according to Iraqi information, before retracting those statements.
In the latest incident, the Hezbollah Brigades mourned one of its members, while accusing Saudi Arabia and the UAE of being behind the bombing.
On the other hand, Hadi al-Amiri, at the time, called on former Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi to open an investigation into the raid, and said that the investigation could reach "information about the targeting of the crowd."
The most prominent raid on the border strip took place days before the airport incident in 2020, when Washington admitted bombing Kataib Hezbollah headquarters there and killing 15 militants.
Regarding the situation on the border with Syria, Fadel Abu Ragheef, a researcher in security affairs, excludes the occurrence of massive infiltration acts such as those being talked about.
Abu Ragheef said in an interview with the newspaper: "There are 4 barriers on the borders: an electronic fence, an earthen embankment, towers, and quadruple barbed wire."
In addition, the security researcher close to the intelligence departments explains: "The presence of thermal and night cameras on the borders with Syria, and a crack 3 meters deep, 3 meters wide, and more than 600 km long."
Abu Ragheef confirms that "Anbar is one of the most peaceful and stable security provinces now, and it has multiple forces from the army, crowd and intelligence, in addition to marches that monitor the borders."
Regarding the occurrence of smuggling or infiltration cases, the security researcher said: "This happens even between America and Mexico, and on the Saudi and Kuwaiti borders and on the Jordanian borders... It is not a justification for smuggling, but it is something that is happening similarly in several countries."
