The Ministry of Agriculture revealed that it has drawn up joint strategic plans with the Ministry of Water Resources, aiming to “harvest the rains” and exploit the abundance of water achieved as a result through the use of small dams in the governorates of Nineveh, Salah al-Din, Anbar and Kirkuk, stressing that the step aims to preserve the water level from waste and loss, And take advantage of it in subsequent seasons or in the absence of a source of water.

The advisor at the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Mahdi Al-Qaisi, stated in an interview with "Al-Sabah" that "the Department of Forestry and Desertification in the Ministry of Agriculture relied, within its programs and plans, on the principle of (rainfall harvesting) as an important and effective means of water collection, especially in the western and northern regions of the country, such as Nineveh, Salah al-Din, Anbar, and Kirkuk governorates, according to the nature and result of the soil examination in those areas.
Al-Qaisi pointed out that the plans include collecting rainwater in pools or special areas such as valleys, with the aim of implementing "rain harvesting projects", which are small dams to store this water in the rainy seasons and benefit from it in subsequent seasons or in the absence of a water source. Stressing that these projects are one of the means adopted by the Department of Forestry and Desertification within its programs and field activities.
Al-Qaisi pointed out that "the Ministry of Water Resources has, in this context, a very effective activity in rain harvesting projects, which represent one of the means of rationing water uses and preserving the water level from waste and loss, indicating at the same time that the soils of the southern governorates differ in nature from those of The western governorates in terms of storing and collecting water, since the soils in the south are clayey, so the Ministry of Water Resources relies on draining excess water from the torrents coming from the borders with Iran to the marshes, water bodies or rivers in the region.
