The Parliamentary Oil, Gas and Natural Resources Committee confirmed, today, Thursday, the ongoing talks about the existence of problems regarding the contract of the French Total company, after several reports confirmed that the French company "refuses" that Iraq acquires a share of 40% of the project.
The deputy head of the committee, Ali al-Mashkour, said in an interview with "Baghdad Today" that "the Ministry of Oil is continuing to activate the gas contract with the French company Total," explaining that "there are some problems with the contract, but Minister Hayan Abdul Ghani is proceeding with solving these problems."
Al-Mashkoor added, "Iraq will go through many oil contracts, including going through the fifth and sixth licensing rounds. The Ministry of Oil is working for many steps to develop this sector," noting that "the means of success in oil lie in the arms of the ministry, and the minister is working to make changes in the ministry."
And international reports said that the French company Total was "shocked" during a meeting with Prime Minister Muhammad al-Sudani and Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani, after it sensed the Minister of Oil's insistence on Iraq's adherence to its share of 40% of the contract, which is the same problem that led to the disruption of the project with the previous government headed by Al-Kazemi and with former Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar, as Total expects Iraq to get only 30% of the project.
Days after Al-Sudani's visit to Paris and the agreement to activate the French Total contract, press reports revealed that Total began withdrawing its personnel from Iraq due to disagreements over its contract with Iraq.
The value of the French Total contract amounts to 27 billion dollars, and it includes 4 contracts represented in developing the Artawi field, investing 600 cubic meters of associated gas, and building solar power plants and desalinating sea water.
