Yesterday, Sunday, the Ministry of Water Resources issued an explanation regarding the suspension of work on the Makhoul Dam project.
The ministry’s advisor, Hassan al-Saffar, said in an interview reported to (Al-Mada) that “Makhul Dam faced many problems during its construction.”
Al-Saffar added, "Geological experts, including Professor Nazir Al-Ansari, dealt with part of these problems, which included placing a concrete body inside the dam's body to protect it from sedimentation." He pointed out that "part of the concrete body was implemented on time," explaining that "the importance of this body lies in protecting the foundations of the dam."
Al-Saffar pointed out, “The Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, and the technical undersecretary of the ministry have suspended the work related to the dam at the present time, until the arrival of the international consultant who will determine whether to continue the work or stop it.”
He added that "the percentage of completion of the dam reaches 25 percent," pointing out that "there are two opinions within the ministry regarding the construction of the dam, so it requires that an international consultant attend and determine whether to continue its construction or stop the work."
Al-Saffar stressed that “Makhul Dam is very important to prevent potential floods, due to climate changes and fear of exceptional flood waves, as is happening in countries around the world.” And he made it clear, "The eastern region of Iraq will be exposed to torrents coming from Iran, and it is expected that they will be from 150 million or more." And Al-Saffar went on, “This will put great pressure on the Upper Zab and the arrival of quantities of water to the front of the Samarra Dam, and we will have to release high drainages towards Baghdad, and we will also direct a larger amount to Tharthar Lake.
