Sulaymaniyah: The Virgin of Juma
Signs of the dollar exchange crisis against the dinar reached Sulaymaniyah Governorate, which recorded an increase in the prices of all foodstuffs and medicines, offset by an increase in the price of fuel, gasoline and construction materials, which generated discontent among citizens, at a time when the provincial council was unable to intervene due to its limited powers in accordance with Law No. 3 of the year 2009.
The head of the Sulaymaniyah Provincial Council, Azad Muhammad Amin, told Al-Sabah: Food prices began to increase gradually, according to the increase in the exchange rates of the dollar against the dinar.
He explained that prices increase according to the increase in the prices of newly imported materials, which makes the trader increase the wages of his goods, noting that Law No. 3 of 2009 regarding the provincial councils defined our powers so that we cannot prevent the price increase or hold those who monopolize the materials accountable, but through our cooperation with the committees of district offices. We are able to monitor the availability of all foodstuffs in the markets and not monopolize them so that their price does not double, in addition to supporting the Directorate of Trade and Industry for some basic materials such as flour, rice, oil and legumes and providing them in the ration card.
He stressed that the citizen is now suffering from the increase in the prices of foodstuffs, fuel, gasoline and medicines, which is a heavy burden on him.
In turn, Professor of Finance and Accounting at the Sulaymaniyah Technical University, Nabard Karim, told Al-Sabah: The increase in the exchange rate of the dollar against the dinar will cause an economic catastrophe, because Iraq is an import country, not an export, and this crisis will increase the poverty rate in the country.
He pointed out that Turkey and Iran were not affected by the high price of the dollar against its currencies in circulation, because they are exporting countries, not importers, and relied on companies, internal resources, and local production.
And he indicated that when conducting a tour of the market and malls to identify the extent to which they are affected by the increase in the exchange rate of the dollar, we find that the citizen is the target by increasing prices for all materials from 6 to 8 percent, as for medicines and health supplies, their increase is much greater than that and may reach 40 percent.
Karim pointed out that trade in the region in general, and in Sulaymaniyah in particular, is considered a free market, as the provincial councils and district committees cannot impose prices, but they play a monitoring and follow-up role for the quality of the goods.
Karim stressed that this crisis will be reflected in real estate prices, as we import all construction materials involved in construction.
As for Dilshad Kawa, the owner of a banking office in central Sulaymaniyah, he explained to Al-Sabah that the increase in the exchange rate of the dollar against the dinar was shocking to us, because it was unexpected and was not gradual, which made the dollar market fluctuate every day.
He added that there is a great demand by merchants and citizens to buy dollars in a way that exchange offices have not seen throughout the province for years, in anticipation of running out of what we have in dollars, thinking that its price will be much higher than the one set for it in the coming days.
