The Ministry of Education attributed its taking of measures to block social media sites during the period of preliminary exams for external students to preserve the confidentiality of questions and not to repeat the problem of leaking them.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Communications noted that this procedure will continue until the end of the exams at the request of the Ministry of Education, and denied the existence of any problem with the Internet service.
The blocking decision sparked controversy among the pioneers of the communication sites, as activists called on the Ministry of Education to take alternative measures during the preliminary or final ministerial exams, because they pay monthly sums for Internet service, and this affects their work, especially since most of them work in the private sector and market their goods through social networking sites. In addition, the procedure led to the cessation of social and other activities, and they considered it a violation of their rights to obtain the service.
The official spokesman for the Ministry of Education, Karim Al-Sayed, told Al-Sabah: The procedure for blocking communication sites is precautionary and supportive of the administrative procedures that the ministry takes during the period of preliminary examinations for external students that are currently taking place, as general managers are keen to follow them up and stay overnight in examination centers for mutual control. Preserving the confidentiality of questions and distributing them among the examination centers with high transparency.
He continued that the exams file is shared by ministries and support institutions to protect them in security and cyberspace based on the recommendations of the committees that were formed after defects and problems in previous years, and that the ministry is keen to protect all its centers in all governorates to ensure that exams are conducted efficiently and impartially.
For his part, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Communications, Omar Abdel-Razzaq, told Al-Sabah: The ministry has worked to block social networking sites, at the request of the Ministry of Education, stressing that there is no defect in the Internet service.
He added that the aim of the procedure is to preserve the conduct of preliminary exams for the academic year 2022-2023 and to prevent exam questions from leaking through social media, according to what was stated in the Ministry of Education's letter in this regard.
Abdul Razzaq explained that the blocking process takes place from 4:00 am until 12:00 noon, with the exception of Friday from blocking websites due to the absence of an exam, and this process will continue until the 13th of this month.
He pointed out that the blocking process did not affect the work of government institutions, banks, and others, because the blocking process is for social networking sites (Facebook), (Instagram), (Telegram), (WhatsApp) and (Viber), with the exception of (website) and ( Youtube).
