Yesterday, Sunday, a government advisor revealed that more than a thousand complaints related to torture and human rights had been referred to the judiciary, stressing that the Council of Ministers is determined to end the displacement file.
The government advisor for human rights affairs, Zaidan Khalaf Obeid, said in a speech on the International Day to Prevent Violent Extremism that Leads to Terrorism, that "efforts to support stability and adopt the approach of coexistence and societal peace are directly linked to the state's policies." Obaid added, "Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani wishes this international conference success and the achievement of the desired goals in light of the circumstances the world is going through."
He pointed out, "Iraq was a pioneer at the level of the region and the world in adopting a national strategy to integrate with the resolution of the United Nations Assembly concerned with drawing up the United Nations strategy in combating terrorism."
Obaid pointed out, “The translation of this strategy into important projects at the level of all sectors of the state, due to his firm conviction that the integrated methodology adopted by governments has supported awareness, education and investment programs with understandings with the countries of the world and the region.”
He noted, "The most recent was the Iraq project for the International Day to Combat Extremism, which is the best way to ward off danger from the world."
Obaid stated, "Iraq is considered one of the global arenas for the growth and spread of violent extremism leading to terrorism, in light of the emergence of extremist terrorist groups such as ISIS and the terrorist Al-Qaeda."
And he stated, “Prime Minister Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani paid great attention in the ministerial program to strengthening the protection of human rights in Iraq and translating this through the issuance of a number of appropriate decisions in the Council of Ministers to consolidate good citizenship and eliminate extremist ideology that leads to terrorism.”
Obaid continues, “Among these decisions, which were described as historic, is the issuance of the Council of Ministers’ historic decision to own lands for the Yazidis and instruct the establishment of the Nineveh Plain and Sinjar Fund to promote coexistence and community peace, which is one of the important means to combat destructive ideas of violent extremism.”
Obeid added, "The prime minister directed to open a window in the Human Rights Office to receive complaints related to human rights."
And he talked about “thousands of complaints of allegations of torture, and a work team was formed in our office to classify and sort them, and then all relevant authorities at the level of the Supreme Judicial Council, ministries, agencies and the Public Prosecution Service are approached to take legal measures with continuous follow-up of the procedures of these authorities.” Obeid confirmed that "more than 1,000 complaints from the Public Prosecution Service have been referred to the Human Rights Court, which reflects the government's transparency in this regard, and it is the first time that this has happened in Iraq in its history." He also said, "The Prime Minister issued directives to end the files of the camps for the displaced, return them to their areas of residence, provide legal guarantees for all the accused, and stress holding violators accountable in accordance with the laws in force."
Obaid stated, "The government's efforts also focused on combating corruption and recovering looted funds, which are no less dangerous than terrorism."
And he continued, "The council took strict measures to limit it, which was announced by the Prime Minister on more than one occasion, including the arrest of those wanted by the judiciary, the return of all money that was taken unlawfully, and the taking of legal measures against them."
And Obaid added, “The government has strengthened economic programs, foremost of which is providing opportunities to employ degree holders and graduates during the past months.”
And he went on to say, “These measures contribute to guaranteeing the rights of these important segments, enhance their sense of citizenship, and prevent any attempt to exploit economic conditions to promote extremist ideology that leads to terrorism.”
Obeid went on to say, "This is not limited to the efforts of state institutions only, but rather it is everyone's responsibility, because achieving this lofty goal requires the cooperation of all civil society institutions.
