    Baghdad - Nas
The Ministry of Environment announced, on Wednesday, that the Prime Ministry has directed the preparation of a new law for waste recycling in the country, and while it indicated that the quantities of leftovers from waste amount to 20 million tons per day throughout Iraq, it confirmed Iraq's intention to launch the "zero waste" project.

The Director General of Technical Affairs in the Ministry, Issa Al-Fayyad, said in a statement to the official agency, followed by "NAS", (February 15, 2023), that "more than 2 kilograms of waste is the daily rate for each Iraqi individual," pointing out that "the prime minister directed the Ministry of environment by preparing a new law for waste recycling in the country, which includes recycling and sorting such waste in a scientific way to keep pace with global development.

Al-Fayyad added, "The ministry made some points in preparing this law, including the purchase of energy that is produced from waste at subsidized prices or subsidizing it through its purchase by the state," noting that "Iraq should move towards the" zero waste "project, which was discussed with The World Bank".

He continued, "The project is related to waste recycling and reuse by making use of organic materials as food for animals after adding some vitamins, in addition to making fertilizers," stressing that "the percentage of food residues out of the total amount of waste reaches 43 percent."

The Director General of Technical Affairs stated that "food leftovers amount to about 20 million tons throughout Iraq daily," noting that "the ministry is in the process of approaching the Municipality of Baghdad and the municipalities to launch the Zero Waste Project."

And Al-Fayyad indicated that "this project needs a long time, but it achieves positive results in the production of animal food," pointing out that "the ministry is seeking to implement this project in residential complexes to end landfill operations."

He stated that "the capital, Baghdad, dumps about 10,000 tons of waste per day at the present time."
