Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, received the US Assistant Secretary of State, acting in charge of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, and the Coordinator of Global Democratic Renewal (Erin Barclay) and her accompanying delegation, on Thursday.
During this meeting, according to a statement by the Foreign Ministry, a copy of which "NAS" received (February 16, 2023), the two sides discussed "several vital issues, foremost of which are the ongoing preparations for holding the second democracy summit scheduled for the end of next March, and the importance of Iraq's participation in the work of this summit."
During the meeting, Barclay expressed "the US administration's support for Iraq in all fields in order to complete the building of democracy in the country and to confront the challenges it faces."
The two sides agreed to "diagnose corruption as a scourge that contributes to the erosion of democracy, which requires joint efforts to combat it at all levels, in a way that enhances the economic situation of Iraq. The two sides also exchanged views on human rights issues and the Iraqi government's measures to protect and guarantee them at all levels."
