The energy company "Siemens" revealed the possibility of benefiting from its experience in Egypt and applying it in accordance with laws, legislation and the current situation in Iraq, and the German energy giant indicated that its agreement with Iraq includes the establishment of an electric station based on associated gas with a capacity of 2000 megawatts.
The company's executive director, Muhannad Al-Saffar, said in an exclusive interview with "Al-Sabah": "The company, after signing the energy program cooperation agreement in Iraq - the second phase, proceeded to complete plans, prepare requirements and set priorities for projects in cooperation with the Ministry of Electricity," noting that " (Siemens) Energy Company is in the process of completing the contracts by signing as soon as possible.
He added, "The company views the Ministry of Electricity and the Iraqi Electricity Company as strategic partners in rebuilding energy, taking into account the different laws and government legislation that are reflected in the method and nature of contracting and implementing projects, noting that these projects that are agreed upon in the memorandum of cooperation are the energy program." The second phase, within the projects included in the plan of the Ministry of Electricity.
And Al-Saffar indicated, "It is possible to benefit from Egypt's experience and apply it in accordance with the laws, legislation and current conditions in the State of Iraq," stressing that "the company's experience in Egypt through the establishment of the three largest combined-cycle plants in the world makes it the preferred partner in the world in the field of Energy solutions and project management.
He continued, "The company has been increasing its operational capabilities in the past year by completing the required maintenance for operating units and installing cooling units in (Rumaila, Al-Sadr and Kirkuk) stations, which supplied the electrical system with more than 500 megawatts, and (Siemens Energy) continues its work in installing the remaining units." Until the summer of 2023.
The Executive Director of the German Energy Company explained that "the demand for energy in Iraq records higher levels by nearly 30% of the volume of production, in addition to the population growth rate, which recorded an average growth rate of 2.3% in the year 2021, and thus Iraq must accelerate the pace of increasing production." Energy through conventional stations and renewable energy stations, and strengthening the electricity transmission network by installing new secondary stations and new transmission lines.
He pointed out, "The completion of the installation and operation of 13 secondary stations with a capacity of 132 kilovolts in the center and south, and they were successfully operated and linked to the national grid," explaining that "the Ministry of Electricity is in the process of completing the connection of transmission lines to these stations, and the installation and operation of the secondary station with a capacity of 400 kilovolts has also been completed." In Anbar, where (Siemens Energy) started its trial operation, and with regard to the Mosul station, the work is continuing, and it is scheduled to complete the installation and operation of the station at the end of this year.
Al-Saffar pointed out, "Iraq is distinguished by its strategic location, and its connection with neighboring countries increases the efficiency of the national electricity grid in Iraq, as well as allowing its entry into global energy markets, which reflects positively on Iraq, as well as creating competitive opportunities to support and enable the national grid." And he continued, "The company, in cooperation with (the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority in the United Arab Emirates), developed the first facility of its kind to produce green hydrogen on a large industrial scale, based on solar energy in the Middle East and North Africa," noting that "this pioneering project for the production of green hydrogen It is a pivotal step in the development of the energy sector, and (Siemens Energy) and within the framework of the memorandum of cooperation for the energy program in Iraq is currently working with the Ministry of Electricity to determine the sites and requirements for the purpose of initiating the submission of the required studies that will be translated into projects after the Ministry’s approval of them.
And Al-Saffar added, "The cooperation agreement for the energy program in Iraq - the second phase included the establishment of an electric station based on associated gas with a capacity of 2000 megawatts, which will contribute to reducing the deficit and reducing carbon emissions," explaining that "(Siemens Energy) and the Ministry of Electricity are working to complete The studies required to determine the sites and initiate this important project.
