Yesterday, Sunday, the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee warned of the seriousness of the water situation, and talked about the worst summer season in the country's history, stressing that most of the dams and reservoirs are empty, and called for quick action to avoid further damage.
This comes at a time when the Ministry of Water Resources confirmed the lack of revenues from neighboring countries, relying on the snow that fell to secure good amounts of water during the spring. A member of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, Hasan Waryush al-Asadi, said in a statement to (Al-Mada) that “Iraq’s water situation is very dangerous and warns of a real disaster in the absence of a future plan and vision.”
Wariosh added, "The water storage in Iraq has reached 7 and a half billion m3, which is the lowest storage that Iraq has reached throughout its history."
He pointed out, "Most of the dams and reservoirs are empty, and there is a halt in the electricity system of the Mosul Dam as a result of the lack of water releases from the Turkish, Syrian and Iranian sides." Al-Asadi called, "the concerned and competent authorities to put pressure on 3 axes close to Iraq to open water releases to the country, otherwise the consequences will be very difficult." He pointed out that "the quantities of water coming from the Turkish dams after the earthquake are less than the quantities agreed upon between the two parties." And Royosh concluded, "Iraq may experience the worst dry season next summer in the history of the Iraqi state, due to the lack of water reserves and inflows from neighboring countries."
In addition, a statement by the Ministry of Water Resources, received by (Al-Mada), stated that “the lack of water revenues led to a sharp decline in water storage in the country.”
The statement added, "This coincided with the lack of rain and the increase in the demand for water to secure irrigation of agricultural crops for the current winter season, which exceeded the planned plan."
He pointed out, “The farmers’ failure to adhere to the agricultural areas determined according to the agricultural plan that approved the surface water, and the failure to adhere to the application of the (marshaneh) system, all of which led to some areas in the southern governorates being affected by the lack of water revenues.”
The statement stressed that "the ministry has taken measures regarding the release of quantities of available storage in the Dokan Dam to enhance the imports of the Tigris River, and signs of the increase have recently reached the Kut Dam."
And he stated, “The quantities of water secured in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers cover the need and all agricultural requirements, drinking water and all other requirements.”
And the statement continues, “All the formations and cadres of the Ministry of Water Resources have taken several measures, in coordination with the operations leaders, to remove these abuses, whether on water quotas or exceeded fish lakes, or the encroachment on the agricultural areas determined according to the agricultural plan for the current winter season.” He added, "This came based on the directives of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani and Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, and as a result of the continued abuses."
And the statement spoke of “the alert of the advanced staff in the ministry in the work sectors deployed in the affected governorates, and through the operating room formed to confront water scarcity.” He called on “local governments to assign the ministry’s cadres to lift the excesses and demand from farmers and farmers to adhere to the water quotas established for each governorate and not to exceed the quotas of other governorates to ensure that water reaches the governorates.” And the statement went on, “The amounts of snow that fell in the Tigris Basin, the Upper Zab and the Lower Zab are good and will secure good amounts of water in case it melts and enhance water storage in dams next spring.” The Tigris and Euphrates rivers are witnessing a serious decline in the quantities of water, while social networking sites published video clips of people crossing the rivers on foot in the southern governorates.
