A specialized parliamentary committee announced the intention of the Ministry of Interior to increase passport fees fourfold, to reach 100,000 dinars per passport.
"Parliament supports the government's steps in implementing its parliamentary-voted approach towards providing the best services," said Hassan Al-Sabri, deputy head of the Parliamentary Economy Committee, in a press conference followed by Al-Mada.
Al-Sabri pointed out, “At the same time, we are keen to perform the constitutional oversight tasks that are entrusted to us, represented by pre-addressing corruption and bypassing the laws in force.”
He explained that we asked a question to the Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, regarding our follow-up to the issuance of the electronic passport.
And Al-Sabri stated, “The question includes a statement of the legal basis for the financial fees to be imposed on every citizen who requests the issuance of a new passport.”
And he talked about, “Information available to us indicates the ministry’s intention to impose fees estimated at four times the current fees, to reach 100,000 dinars instead of 25,000 dinars.”
Al-Sabri confirmed, “This is contrary to the provisions of Article 8 of the Passports Law No. 32 of 2015, in addition to other violations that accompanied the ministry’s contracting process with the private company to issue passports.”
Al-Sabri expressed his hope that "the Presidency of the Parliament will expedite the inclusion of the minister's presence in the agenda of the nearest parliamentary session, and we also hope that the Minister of Interior will cooperate in the presence and cooperation in serving the public interest and the Iraqi citizen."
