The US Secretary of Defense is in Baghdad to test the government's pledge to protect coalition forces and push Iran's influence

Baghdad / Tamim Al-Hassan
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin came to closely test Baghdad's commitments to disengage from Iran and protect the coalition forces. Immediately upon Austin's arrival in the capital on an unannounced visit, he met with Prime Minister Muhammad al-Sudani, while he later visited the Kurdistan region and met with his officials. Politicians say that the government is in a decisive position regarding its position on Iran, and that the “framework” is taking steps back regarding the “resistance” slogans.
Yesterday, Iraqi electronic platforms circulated pictures of the Austin plane landing at Victoria Base near Baghdad Airport.
Informed political sources told Al-Mada that the visit of the US Secretary of Defense: “is a continuation of the previous steps taken by the Iraqi government to develop relations with Washington.”
Those sources, who asked not to be identified, indicated that Austin "came to make sure closely of the guarantees given to Washington to protect the coalition forces in Iraq and reduce Iranian influence."
A week ago, the government delegation had returned from Washington after holding talks on preventing the leakage of dollars into Iran and expanding partnership with the United States. According to Reuters, Washington is not only interested in the military aspect, but it "desires greatly to establish a full strategic partnership with the Iraqi government."
The agency indicated, quoting the unnamed source, that "the aspects of that cooperation that Washington wants to achieve will be revealed later."
Recently, Iraq began producing gas, while it was reported that this came with the support of Washington as part of the policies of suffocating Iran.
American forces remain
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani affirmed, following the Austin meeting, the government's keenness to strengthen relations with the United States of America.
The media office of the Prime Minister stated that "during the meeting, they reviewed the joint cooperation between Iraq and the United States of America, and the performance of the Iraqi security forces in combating terrorism, and pursuing the terrorist gangs of ISIS."
During the meeting, Al-Sudani affirmed, "the government's keenness to strengthen and consolidate relations with the United States of America, at various levels and levels."
He stated that "the stability of Iraq is a key to the security and stability of the region," pointing to "Iraq's role in converging views and reducing tensions in the region."
For his part, the US Secretary of Defense confirmed that "US forces are ready to stay in Iraq according to the desire of the Iraqi government, and we will continue to work with our partners to confront the threat of ISIS."
The US Secretary of Defense said, in a press conference, that "the coalition worked with the Iraqi government to eliminate ISIS."
He added, "Military action alone will not guarantee the final elimination of ISIS." Austin explained, "We liberated, through the international coalition, the Iraqis from the tyranny of ISIS," adding that "the Iraqi forces have become at the forefront of security efforts."
He pointed out, "The American forces present in Iraq provide advice and support, and they are present in Iraq at the request of the government."
Austin stressed, "We believe in the need to integrate Iraq with partners in the region, and we are optimistic about the future of partnership with Iraq, and we will work to strengthen it."
The Iraqi government had begun a few days ago to form committees to follow up the economic, cultural and trade aspects within the strategic framework agreement with Washington.
Secret visit.. and messages
Regarding the secrecy of Austin's visit to Baghdad, Ihsan al-Shammari, head of the Center for Political Thinking, says, "There are security measures in place, and most American officials announce their visit after their arrival or after the end of the visit."
Al-Shammari said in an interview with (Al-Mada) that the presence of the US Secretary of Defense in Baghdad "represents Washington's rapid turnaround of relations with Iraq, especially with the rise of Iran's allies to power."
He pointed out that the United States "does not want the government to go towards Iran, as it was in the government of Adel Abdul-Mahdi."
Al-Shammari said, "America also does not want Iraq to be a threat to the interests of Washington and its friends in the region."
On the other hand, the visit of the Minister of Defense may carry various other messages, according to the leader of the Umma Party, Mithal Al-Alusi.
Al-Alusi said in his interview with (Al-Mada): “Washington wants to tell Iran that it is present in Iraq, and to Israel and the world that it controls the situation in Baghdad.” As for the Iraqi government, Al-Alusi, a former deputy, says, "Al-Sudani wants to tell the Americans that he will be with them regardless of the whims of the coordination framework."
Al-Alusi warns that "the Iraqi government is now at a crossroads, either to fall or to distance itself from Iran."
However, political researcher Ihsan al-Shammari believes that the Shiite alliance: “is aware of the importance of America for the continuation of the coordination framework in governance, and thus it has taken steps back from its previous slogans of resistance.” Al-Shammari considers that even if the coordination framework disagrees with Al-Sudani about the relationship with Washington, it will not go public, especially since the Shiite group got rid of embarrassment under the pretext of “delegating Al-Sudani to manage the matter with America and that it is an issue related to the executive apparatus.”
After that, Austin arrived in Erbil and met with the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani.
Barzani said during a press conference with Austin, on the sidelines of the meeting, that "the opinions of the two sides were in agreement on the importance of resolving the problems between Erbil and Baghdad for stability in the region," stressing that "the Kurdistan region will always be a factor of stability for the region."
For his part, Austin affirmed his country's support for the memorandum of understanding between the Peshmerga and America, expressing his condemnation of the continuous Iranian attacks, and calling on Baghdad and Erbil to work together.
He referred to the joint work between the two sides for more than 10 years, adding: "We have liberated a large area from ISIS in cooperation with the international coalition.
