On Sunday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shayaa al-Sudani inaugurated the Iraq Climate Conference, which is being hosted by Basra, with international, regional and governmental participation. He also launched an initiative to plant 5 million trees and palm trees.
Al-Sudani's office said in a statement received by "Al-Iqtisad News" that "Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a Al-Sudani inaugurated the Iraq Climate Conference, which is being hosted by Basra, with international, regional and governmental participation." In a speech he delivered at the opening of the conference, he affirmed, "The government is continuing with its program, which has given special importance to addressing the effects of climate change, and has developed several treatments to mitigate the economic, environmental and social impacts that accompany the change."
Al-Sudani stressed "the importance of following up on everything related to the implementation of the Iraqi vision for climate action, in particular clean and renewable energy projects, and efforts to preserve Iraq's rights in the waters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers."
During the conference, Al-Sudani launched a major initiative to plant 5 million trees and palm trees in all governorates of Iraq.
He explained that "climatic changes, which were represented by high temperatures, scarcity of rain, and an increase in dust storms, with a decrease in green spaces, threatened food, health, environmental and societal security."
He pointed out that "more than 7 million citizens have been affected, their areas have suffered from drought, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced because they lost their livelihoods that depend on agriculture and hunting, and the most unfortunate thing is the severe drought that afflicted our beautiful marshes."
He stressed that "the national priority to limit climate change was to provide the nationally determined contribution to reduce emissions, and to prepare national strategies for environment, biodiversity and pollution control."
And Al-Sudani indicated that "we are working on preparing Iraq's vision for climate action until the year 2030," considering that "holding the climate conference represents a promising start in environmental and climate action commensurate with the size of the challenges we face."
"The government has sought, within its government program, to give priority to confronting the effects of climate change through a number of projects that contribute to reducing emissions," he said.
He pointed out that "the projects include the establishment of renewable energy stations, the rehabilitation of closed sanitary landfill sites, projects to combat desertification, water-regulated irrigation techniques, and heavy water treatments."
He explained, "We recently signed contracts for the fifth licensing round to invest in associated gas and stop burning it to reduce carbon emissions by large proportions," noting that "we are continuing to sign contracts to establish power plants from renewable sources, to cover a third of our electricity needs by 2030."
He stressed that "the Economic Ministerial Council will set a time frame for the implementation of projects of strategies for biodiversity and pollution control, and the national contribution document for reducing emissions."
He directed, "to expand the national initiative to reduce emissions to include various sectors, and the package of projects to reduce traffic in Baghdad is one of the solutions to reduce emissions."
He announced the "launch of a major afforestation initiative, which includes planting 5 million trees and palm trees in all governorates of Iraq, accompanied by the launch of a national guide for urban afforestation for the first time in Iraq."
Al-Sudani launched the “Natural Cover Development Project with the aim of combating desertification through important contracts with specialized international companies, especially in the areas where dust storms originate locally.”
He stated, "Basra Governorate has priority in implementing these projects because of its critical environmental situation. Taking care of Basra's environment is the criterion for the government's seriousness in dealing with the environmental impact file."
And the Council of Ministers will allocate "periodic sessions to follow up on the implementation of Iraq's climate agenda, and the implementation of environmental projects."
During the conference, he called on "friendly countries and all United Nations organizations to support us in facing the effects of climate change and to strengthen the terms of international cooperation in the joint management of transboundary river basins, and to preserve the rights of the riparian countries."
He pointed out that "unilateral control of water in the upstream countries increases the vulnerability of countries in facing the effects of climate change." And he stressed "a call for a regional conference to be held in Baghdad soon, to enhance cooperation and joint coordination, and exchange experiences and programs among the countries of the region in confronting climate effects."
