The Ministry of Water Resources criticized the water policies of the riparian countries, which transformed Iraq from the country of the two great rivers into simple channels controlled by Turkish dams with the water shares they receive, warning of Turkey's intention to construct 20 additional dams on all branches that feed the main rivers.
Iraq is going through a suffocating water crisis, the worst in its history for more than 70 years, as a result of the absence of binding understandings or agreements for the riparian countries that specify fixed shares of the waters of the common rivers, in addition to the global warming that the entire region suffers from.
The Minister of Resources, Aoun Dhiab Abdullah, said in a statement to "Al-Sabah": Iraq has not yet been able to communicate the size of the water problem it suffers from to the international community, and therefore it is absent from it, and it is currently seeking to demand support from it in this regard, indicating that it is no longer the country of the two great rivers. The Tigris and the Euphrates, because its rivers have become simple channels that control the Turkish dams with their water shares.
He stated that Turkey, for its part, continues to construct a large number of dams on the Tigris River, the latest of which is the huge Ilisu Dam, warning that it intends to construct additional dams on all branches that feed the main rivers, and their numbers reach 20 main dams, recalling that there are already more than 104 dams on a river basin. Tigris and Euphrates in it.
Abdullah explained that there are many countries all over the world that lie on common river basins, which requires either joint agreements between them to obtain specific and fair proportions of river water, or creating a kind of conflict between them on this matter, indicating that the role of the United Nations in this regard By reaching fair friendly understandings for all. He pointed out that the suffocating water crisis that Iraq is experiencing has caused internal conflicts between the governorates over the scarce shares of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, as a result of encroaching on them, as is the case with the encroachments on the Shatt al-Hilla, in which three governorates are involved, namely Babel, Diwaniyah and Muthanna, which requires the intervention of the ministry’s staff to distribute The water shares fairly, usually at the present time, the most difficult for these owners as a result of the repeated attacks on them due to the removal of abuses on the taboos of the main and secondary rivers.
