When I was about to conduct this interview with Ambassador Paul Bremer, I told him that an Iraqi-American friend whispered in my ear that “This is not just an ambassador, but rather a president. He ruled Iraq for more than a year!

In his capacity as head of the “Coalition Provisional Authority” after the Iraq war declared by US President George Bush on the night of March 19, 2003, with the aim of overthrowing President Saddam Hussein’s rule in Iraq, the “kisangered diplomat” sat alone in the White House, face to face with the president who assigned him. Two great missions: running the wheel of the economy, and forming a new path for governance in Iraq. He went there armed with this mandate, and benefiting from what he learned from the former Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, and from his work in the private sector after he graduated from Yale and Harvard Universities in the United States and the Institute for Political Studies in France.
Paul Bremer holds many secrets that he avoids going into. He did not refer much to the documents of the Iraqi state and the Baath Party there. After Saddam's rule completely collapsed on April 9, 2003, he jokingly told me that after he had "completed" his mission, which began on May 9, 2003, and ended on June 28, 2004. He paid American lawyers "more sums than I got from my work in Iraq." This was an opportunity to share a funny story with the former German delegate to the United Nations, Christoph Heusseggen, who was a national security advisor under Chancellor Angela Merkel, and is currently serving as president of the “Munich Security Conference,” when I jokingly suggested that he reveal his secrets in order to publish them. I said, "With this, our fame will fly away... but in two different ways." The American diplomat giggled before we actually started having this conversation with Asharq Al-Awsat.
