    On the sidelines of the United Nations Water Conference held in New York, the President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, received, on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at his residence in New York, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Qu Dongyu.
    The President of the Republic referred to the importance of cooperation and joint action to address the drought phenomenon that Iraq suffers from and to benefit from the experiences of the (FAO) organization with other countries, pointing to the challenges that the country faces at the level of climate changes, water scarcity, desertification and dust and their negative effects on the agricultural and environmental reality, which requires joint coordination. between the Iraqi authorities and the organization, stressing the need to implement irrigation projects, especially in villages and rural areas, to encourage people to return to their areas, and to establish small projects in areas such as the city of Shingal, and to provide departments with weather monitoring stations and stations for measuring river discharge, and to equip veterinary departments with laboratories and medical devices, which calls for strengthening positive partnership between Iraq and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
    For his part, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) expressed his great pleasure in meeting the President of the Republic, expressing his great interest in what the President of the Republic put forward, as Qu Dongyu confirmed his keenness to translate these ideas into reality, and that they will be within their work program and tasks during the coming period. Pointing out that the organization's teams will visit Iraq to follow up on all issues and to strengthen relations between the organization and Iraq in the field of agricultural cooperation and capacity building.
