    Baghdad Today - Follow-up
Today, Friday, the International Associated Press described the situation in Basra Governorate as "confusing," citing the assumptions of economists and politicians about the reasons that led to keeping the province in the situation it is in now.
The agency said in a report, translated by (Baghdad Today), that the province of Basra "is considered one of the most stable regions in Iraq, and it is also the richest in oil and other resources and possesses the only sea outlet for Iraq." , and despite that, unemployment is widespread in the province and controls the conditions of its youth under the age of twenty-five years old, who make up half of its population.
And she continued, according to the report: “Basra also suffers from a large spread of cancer diseases and for various reasons, including the legacy of the war and the negative environmental effects left by oil extraction operations on the health of its population, coupled with the health care sector, education, energy and services with fluctuating and inappropriate performance," as she described.
The agency also indicated that the governorate, which exports about three million barrels of oil per day through its ports, is still "among the poorest in the country, and the least favored by services," stressing that "the association of high rates of poverty , unemployment, and poor services with security stability and the internal wealth of the governorate baffled specialists.”
The Associated Press conducted an interview with the people of Basra Governorate, which showed that they hold them responsible for the state of the province due to "the large corruption operations that control the capabilities of the province through the local government and the federal authorities operating within it," noting that a study issued by the International Labor Organization last year 2022 showed that the governorate suffers from an unemployment rate of 21% of the total population, with 20% of its population living below the poverty line.
And she warned of the consequences of the situation remaining within the province as it is, noting that foreign investment may contribute to solving many problems that the province suffers from in particular, and the country in general, including gas investment in the province to address the energy crisis, something that is hindered by "long government negotiations." and the clans' control of the investment sites,” according to its description.
